Experience in Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. Ability to titrate drips and care for mechanically ventilated patients. Proficient use of EPIC charting system. Description : This is a general pediatric unit with a specialty in pediatric intensive care. The unit accommodates patients from 0 to 18 years of age, including stable adult overflow cases. Common diagnoses for general pediatrics include respiratory illness, diabetes, septicemia, cellulitis, neglect / abuse, mental health issues, trauma, neurologic conditions, and various general surgeries. Advanced care pediatrics includes patients requiring critical or intensive care services. These patients may present with acute and chronic respiratory insufficiency, circulatory failure, infectious diseases causing organ dysfunction, endocrine disorders, metabolic disorders, neurologic diseases, toxic ingestions or exposures, trauma, hematologic conditions, and oncologic diseases. Patient ratios for general pediatrics are 1 nurse to 5 patients. In the advanced care pediatrics unit, ratios range from 1 nurse to 1-2 patients. Physical assessments and evaluations of patient symptoms and vital signs are necessary. Nurses will administer medications as prescribed and educate patients and families on the plan of care. Support on the unit includes nursing assistants who function at a ratio of 1 to 5, with charge nurses overseeing both units. Nurses are expected to draw their own labs and start IVs, with ultrasound assistance available for difficult cases. Resource support includes nurse clinicians, nurse educators, pediatric pharmacy, pediatric social work, and case management. The facility employs a weekend rotation every other weekend. Employees are expected to be available for holiday shifts as scheduled. Time off requires pre-approval. The work environment is described as traveler-friendly with a culture of learning and growth.
