Export Control Specialist

Job Summary

The Office of Research Security and Ethics is seeking an Export Control Specialist to support the university's export control program. This role involves assisting with compliance under the Export Administration Regulations (EAR), International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR), and Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC).

The Specialist will assist with preliminary export control reviews, support classification and licensing determinations, and help evaluate research proposals, agreements, international travel, visitors, and shipments for export control concerns. Additional responsibilities include helping monitor technology control plans and supporting the development of compliance resources. Training in export control compliance will be provided.

Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree required and one to three years of experience in research compliance.

Preferred Education and Experience

Experience administering export control compliance, international trade compliance, or relevant federal national security policies and regulations in industry or in an academic research environment.

Other Qualifications

To the extent this position requires the holder to research, work on, or have access to critical infrastructure as defined in Section 117.001(2) of the Texas Business and Commerce Code, the ability to maintain the security or integrity of the critical infrastructure is a minimum qualification to be hired and to continue to be employed in the position.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Assist with ensuring institutional compliance with federal export control regulations and policies, including EAR, ITAR, OFAC, and National Security Presidential Memorandum 33, under the guidance of senior compliance staff.
• Conduct preliminary reviews to help determine export control classifications and potential licensing requirements for technology, software, equipment, and related items.
• Support the compliance review process for university activities such as research proposals and awards, travel authorizations, purchase orders, visitor requests, shipping, and vendor / sponsor requests.
• Help monitor implementation of technology control plans and export risk mitigation plans, escalating concerns to senior staff as needed.
• Apply analytical, problem-solving, and detail-oriented skills to ensure accurate compliance reviews, documentation, and recommendations.
• Assist with developing and updating compliance guidance materials and informational resources for institutional stakeholders.
• Help communicate guidance clearly and work with faculty, staff, and external partners to address compliance questions.
• Participate in training and review updates shared by the research security team to stay informed about evolving federal regulations and internal policies.
• Perform record keeping responsibilities for export control compliance, including file organization, reminders, communications, and meetings.
• Other duties as assigned to help support the creation, implementation, and maintenance of new compliance procedures and programs related to export control.

Remote Work Notice : After the 6 month probationary period, this role may be eligible for a hybrid (partly remote / partly in office) work schedule, subject to business need and manager approval. May be required to use personal computer and other standard office equipment. Must be located within the

DFW

Area and have the ability to be on campus with 24 hours of notice. A UT Dallas Remote Work Agreement will be required within 14 days after approval.
