Job description

Solid Waste Crew Supervisor

The purpose of this position is to provide daily oversight and supervision of a line of service for solid waste operations provide and oversee solid waste personnel while providing a high level of customer service.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities :

  • Investigates and confirms City staff's collection service deliveries.
  • Plans, initiates and monitors City staff's daily activities.
  • Plans and monitors the effectiveness of business recycling programs.
  • Observes, documents, and evaluates City staff performance.
  • Operates equipment in support of daily collection activities as needed for continuity of service schedules.
  • Oversees and executes customer service activities and initiatives.

Supplemental Functions :

  • Performs other similar duties as required.

    • Job Specifications and Qualifications :

    Knowledge :

  • Operating heavy equipment and hand and power tools
  • Solid waste and recycling collection principles and practices
  • Applicable local, state and federal laws, rules, and regulations
  • Budgetary principles

    • Licensing and Certifications :

  • Valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver's License;
  • CPR and First Aid Certified.

    • PLEASE NOTE : Applicants must meet the City criteria for an acceptable driving record.

    Working Conditions / Physical Requirements :

  • Positions in this class require : standing, fine dexterity, walking, lifting, carrying, sitting, reaching, handling, kneeling, pushing / pulling, climbing, vision, foot controls, balancing, bending, crouching, hearing, twisting, talking.
  • Heavy Work : Exerting 50 - 100 pounds occasionally, 25 -50 pounds frequently, or from 10 up to 20 pounds constantly.
  • Incumbents may be subjected to extreme temperature, wetness and / or humidity, respiratory hazards, noise and vibration, physical hazards.

  • Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.

    • Required Experience :

    High school diploma or equivalency, with at least five (5) years of relevant experience in Solid Waste & Recycling and demonstrated leadership experience in the form of Supervisor, Team Lead or Crew Leader; or the City may consider an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
