SUMMARY OF POSITION :
The Safety & Risk Management Lead is accountable for the strategic development and tactical execution of safety, industrial hygiene, and risk management programs at Cornerstone Energy Park’s chemical manufacturing facility. This role leads initiatives to proactively identify and reduce operational risk, support compliance with safety and health regulations, and drive continuous improvement in safety performance and culture.
This role is the primary incident investigator for high-potential and serious events and provides oversight and leadership of the site’s industrial hygiene program , including exposure monitoring, hazard assessments, and health risk mitigation. As a member of the HSSE leadership team, this position serves as a key advisor to site leadership and operational teams
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES :
Develop and lead the site’s integrated Safety & Risk Management strategy, aligning with corporate goals and regulatory standards.
Partner with operations, engineering, and maintenance to embed risk-based decision making and safety-by-design principles into all plant activities.Maintain ownership of the site risk register and ensure prioritization and resourcing of critical risk controls and mitigation actions.Influence and support the development of a strong safety culture across employees, contractors, and leadership.Incident Investigation & Learning :Serve as the primary lead for incident investigations involving high-risk scenarios, PSM events, serious injuries, or significant near misses.
Facilitate root cause analyses (e.g., 5-Why, TapRooT®, cause mapping) and ensure corrective actions address systemic issues.Track investigation trends and drive organizational learning through proactive communication and procedural improvements.Coach and build investigation capability across departments to promote site-wide ownership of incident prevention.Risk Identification & Operational Controls :Lead hazard identification and risk assessments (JSAs, PHAs, LOPAs), ensuring robust preventive and mitigative controls.
Partner with Engineering to integrate risk controls into MOC, PSSR, capital projects, and reliability programs.Monitor and analyze leading and lagging safety metrics to identify performance gaps and guide interventions.Industrial Hygiene (IH) & Occupational Health :Own and manage the site’s Industrial Hygiene program, ensuring compliance with OSHA, ACGIH, and corporate standards.
Conduct or coordinate exposure assessments for noise, chemicals, dust, vapor, heat stress, and other physical / chemical hazards.Maintain IH sampling plans, schedules, and records; interpret results and recommend exposure controls.Collaborate with operations and maintenance to implement engineering, administrative, or PPE controls for identified IH risks.Work with occupational health providers to align medical surveillance programs (e.g., hearing conservation, respiratory protection) with IH findings.Ensure all IH-related documentation, reports, and compliance records are complete and up to date.Compliance & Engagement :Ensure ongoing compliance with OSHA, EPA, PSM, RMP, and other relevant health and safety regulations.
Supporting regulatory audits and internal assessments leads to the closure of findings.Deliver or oversee targeted training related to safety, health hazards, emergency response, and regulatory topics.Engage daily with employees and contractors to model safe behavior, conduct observations, and lead continuous improvement efforts.Respond and support to field injuries from Maintenance and Manufacturing teams.KEY SKILLS :

5+ years of safety, industrial hygiene, or risk management experience in chemical, refining, or complex manufacturing environments.Demonstrated leadership in incident investigation, risk assessment, and exposure control.Experience with EHS software systems, sampling equipment, and analytical tools preferred.Strong interpersonal, leadership, and technical writing skills.ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS :
Advanced knowledge of OSHA regulations commonly applicable in the chemical industry.Experienced as an auditor of safety processes and programs.Knowledge in local safety, health, and environmental laws and regulations.Strong working knowledge of OSHA standards (including 29 CFR 1910 Subparts Z and G), PSM, RMP, and IH methodologies.EDUCATION :
Minimum Required : Bachelor’s degree in safety, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, Environmental Science, or a related technical discipline.Preferred : Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), or Associate Safety Professional (ASP).Cornerstone Chemical Company is an affirmative action / equal opportunity employer.
