Job Summary

The senior assistant director / assistant director is responsible for the recruitment and counseling of traditional first year, transfer and / or adult students; managing professional staff; and providing office leadership including coordinating strategy for recruiting diverse populations of students, domestic and international. They are expected to travel to regional and national recruitment events, meet with prospective students and their families, and evaluate several hundred applications per year.

Essential Job Functions

  • Manage a territory to include prospective first year students, international students and potentially adult and transfer students.
  • Recruit, evaluate and counsel students from the prospect stage through their enrollment, including developing communications and contacting students, families, and counselors to motivate and assist students in moving through all points in the admission funnel.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to customer service by communicating clearly, positively, and effectively in a timely manner with a diverse group of constituents.
  • Create and execute strategies to recruit students of diverse backgrounds, striving to make the admission process accessible and equitable to all populations of students.
  • Lead projects within the Office of Undergraduate Admission and work on community belonging and inclusion initiatives with groups including the admission Equity Team; Simmons Student Center for Leadership and Engagement, Multicultural Center, Center for Global Education, and Community-Based Organizations (CBOs).
  • Contribute to the strategy and implementation of recruitment initiatives geared towards international students, working closely with partner Kaplan International.
  • Coordinate on the planning of on-campus and virtual admission events to serve targeted populations of students.
  • Plan and conduct travel to college fairs, community colleges, and high schools to speak with prospective students, their parents, and college counselors, strategizing which regions and schools will make the biggest impact, and maintaining positive relationships with college counselors, consultants, and community organizations.
  • Serve as the primary application reviewer for recruitment territory, and a second reader for approximately 20-25% of the applicant pool.
  • Manage approximately 2 professional staff members.

Other Duties And Responsibilities

  • Participate in all on-campus recruitment events, as well as those hosted off campus when appropriate.
  • Provide leadership and work closely with other managers to develop and implement strategy and vision for the office.
  • Research and guide the implementation of appropriate best practices in recruitment of diverse populations.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Three years of professional experience in an undergraduate admission setting. Other types of work experiences could include graduate admission, financial aid, or high school counseling.
  • Valid US driver's license and ability to rent a car, as most recruitment occurs in areas not served by public transportation or reliable taxis / ride share
  • Passport or REAL ID to enable travel by flight
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree
  • Fluency in one or more of the most common languages other than English in our applicant pool (Spanish, Arabic, Portuguese, Vietnamese, Mandarin, and / or Haitian Creole).

  • 12 months at 40 hours / week, with significant hours beyond the established work week at certain times of the year
  • Communicate with others in-person and by email, video conferencing, and telephone
  • Work is performed in a setting with moderate noise levels, controlled temperature conditions, and no direct exposure to hazardous physical substances.
  • When not traveling :
  • Hybrid schedule (on campus 3 days per week)
  • Generally sedentary office environment with significant time operating a computer
  • During reading season (mostly November-March), may be reading and rating applications on a computer for 8+ hours per day
  • During the travel season :
  • Travel independently for approximately 4-6 weeks in the fall (generally late August to early November) and 2-3 weeks in the spring (generally late February to mid-May), with occasional short trips in the summer. Trips will range from day trips, to brief overnights, to multiple trips that require overnight stays on location for up to two weeks at a time. Travel may be virtual, regional, or national, and though it will primarily be within assigned territories, it is not restricted to assigned territories. During the travel season, they will typically work multiple nights per week (workdays may last up to 16 hours) and will attend college fairs and other events that are held on weekends and holidays.
  • Most trips require several hours of driving per day; and many trips require significant time on planes and / or trains
  • College fair setup and breakdown requires light lifting (up to 20 pounds) of fair materials 5+ times per day. College fairs may last from 45 minutes up to 5 hours and are generally in a crowded indoor space like a gym, cafeteria, or convention center, and are occasionally held outdoors in temperate weather.
