Job description

Facility Maintenance Worker

Under general supervision, performs a variety of custodial and basic maintenance duties related to the care, cleaning and general maintenance of Town infrastructure including assigned buildings, facilities, parks and park facilities; moves furniture and equipment to set up for classes, activities, functions and special events; uses and operates a variety of manual and power tools and light equipment; interacts with and provides basic information and assistance to the public; and performs related work as required.

Receives general supervision from assigned supervisory personnel. Exercises no direct supervision of staff. This is a classification that performs the full range of duties required to ensure that Town buildings, facilities, parks and park facilities provide the highest level of safety for public and staff use. Work is often performed in an assigned area and may involve working around other Town staff and / or the public, depending upon assignment. This class is distinguished from other maintenance classes in that the latter perform semi-skilled to skilled maintenance work in a specified area, such as buildings and facilities, while the duties of this class are more related to the custodial and facilities support function, with basic and preventative maintenance activities fulfilling a lesser part of the job responsibilities.

Examples of typical functions include :

  • Performs various custodial duties, including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, and polishing to ensure that Town buildings and facilities provide the highest level of safety for public and staff use.
  • Opens Town facilities, community center and restrooms.
  • Cleans and maintains restrooms; stocks restrooms with necessary supplies; reports necessary repairs.
  • Reviews recreation and event schedules as needed; assists in the set-up and removal of equipment and facilities needed for facility use and special events.
  • Operates and maintains a variety of equipment and tools related to the cleaning and general maintenance of Town facilities and parks.
  • Sets up rooms and equipment for classes, events, conferences, meetings, and other functions; moves and arranges furniture.
  • Sets up communication equipment, audio visual equipment and provides beverage services as required.
  • Sweeps, vacuums, mops, waxes, strips, and polishes floors; vacuums, shampoos carpets and cleans all glass.
  • Cleans furniture and counter tops.
  • Performs preventative maintenance and minor maintenance and adjustments on equipment, appliances, facilities, and buildings, including replacing light bulbs, cleaning air vents, and basic painting, carpentry, electrical, and plumbing work.
  • Identifies and reports building maintenance needs to appropriate staff.
  • Receives and acts upon complaints, referrals, and concerns from the public and other Town staff; responds to and performs work in emergency situations as required.
  • Interfaces with the public in a non-disruptive manner; answers questions and provides standard information to the public if working in a public facility.
  • Observes safe working practices, including maintaining storage areas in a safe condition.
  • Maintains records of maintenance and cleaning activities; maintains inventory of equipment and supplies.
  • Assists groups using facilities as requested; may explain or enforce facility rules.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Physical demands include the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects up to 100 pounds. Employees work in buildings, facilities, parks and park facilities and are occasionally exposed to loud noise levels, controlled temperatures, confining workspace, chemicals, mechanical and / or electrical hazards, and hazardous physical substances and fumes. Employees may interact with upset staff and / or public and private representatives, and contractors in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures. Disaster Service Worker : All Town employees are, by State and Federal law, Disaster Service Workers. The roles and responsibilities for Disaster Service Workers are authorized by the California Emergency Services Act and are defined in the California Labor Code. In the event of a declaration of emergency, any employee of the Town may be assigned to perform activities which promote the protection of public health and safety or the preservation of lives and property. Such assignments may require service at locations, times, and under conditions that are significantly different from the normal work assignments and may continue into the recovery phase of the emergency. If a "Local Emergency" is declared during the employee's shift, the employee will be expected to remain at work due to the emergency needs of the community. If a "Local Emergency" is declared outside of the employee's shift, the employee must make every effort to contact his / her direct supervisor or department head to obtain reporting instructions as a Disaster Service Worker.
