GARNEY CONSTRUCTION
As a Payroll Manager in N. Kansas City, MO, you will be a key member of our Financial Services team, playing a critical role in maintaining accurate payroll processing, general ledger accounting for the payroll process, managing tax filings, and supporting strategic initiatives across the organization. This role requires a deep understanding of payroll tax and compliance and offers the opportunity to drive process improvements and collaborate across departments.
WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING
- Assist in overseeing the end-to-end payroll process for multiple entities and jurisdictions.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable payroll laws, regulations, and internal policies.
- Manage multi-state payroll tax reporting, filings, and reconciliations, including quarterly and annual returns, and W-2 filing.
- Collaborate with HR, Finance and Accounting, Project teams, and external vendors to ensure accurate employee data and timely processing.
- Analyze labor costs and variance analysis
- Oversee union payroll reporting, fringe benefit submissions, and prevailing wage compliance reporting
- Lead audits and respond to inquiries from regulatory agencies.
- Identify and implement process improvements to enhance payroll efficiency and accuracy.
- Maintain and update payroll systems, ensuring data integrity and security.
- Supervise and support Payroll Coordinators, fostering collaboration and professional development.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in payroll compliance and payroll tax, preferably in a multi-state environment.
- Strong knowledge of Federal, state, and local payroll regulations.
- Experience with payroll systems (e.g., ADP, UKG, Paycom, or similar).
- Proficiency with construction accounting software such as Viewpoint/Spectrum, Procore, etc
- Knowledge of union payroll, prevailing wage laws, certified payroll reporting, and construction job costing
- High proficiency in Excel (pivot tables, xlookups, complex formulas)
- Knowledge of worker’s compensation classifications and audit processes
- High level of confidentiality and integrity
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field
- CPP (Certified Payroll Professional) or CPA (Certified Public Accountant) designation is a plus.
