Post-Anesthesia Care Unit Registered Nurse (PACU RN)

Overview

The Post-Anesthesia Care Unit Registered Nurse provides specialized nursing care to patients recovering from anesthesia following surgical or invasive procedures. The PACU RN ensures safe emergence from anesthesia, manages post-operative pain and vital signs, and supports a smooth transition to the next phase of recovery or discharge.

Responsibilities

  • Assess and monitor patients emerging from anesthesia for airway patency, hemodynamic stability, and level of consciousness.
  • Administer medications and treatments as ordered, including pain management and antiemetics.
  • Recognize and respond promptly to post-anesthesia complications or emergencies.
  • Collaborate with anesthesia providers, surgeons, and perioperative team members to ensure coordinated, safe patient care.
  • Provide patient and family education on post-operative care and discharge instructions.
  • Accurately document assessments, interventions, and outcomes in the electronic medical record.

    • Qualifications

  • Current, active Registered Nurse (RN) license in good standing.
  • BLS and ACLS required; PALS preferred (based on patient population).
  • Minimum two (2) years of recent PACU, ICU, or critical care experience required.
  • ADN required; BSN preferred.
  • Strong assessment, clinical judgment, and communication skills essential.
