This unit provides care for both adult and pediatric patients. The unit does not have an ICU, but may care for patients with ICU acuity. RNs will not be asked to work outside their scope of practice. The nurse-to-patient ratio during the day is 1 : 4-5. During the night, the ratio is 1 : 5-6. If a patient is truly critical, the nurse will have a 1 : 1 or 1 : 2 ratio. Common patient diagnoses include respiratory issues, infectious diseases, gastrointestinal issues, ETOH intoxication / withdrawal, liver disease, acute kidney injury, diabetes, and swingbed / rehabilitation needs. RNs are required to titrate drips including insulin, Lasix, Cardizem, Heparin, Aminophylline, Magnesium, Potassium, Albumin, and blood products. There are no Charge Nurses on each shift; a house supervisor or coordinator is available. Patient care technicians are present in a 1 : 12 ratio. RNs must read and interpret telemetry; there are no monitor techs. Shifts include both days and nights and cannot guarantee blocked scheduling. Weekends require a minimum of 2 out of every 6 weekends. Holidays may be required; RTO requests are considered if given in advance. Floating to other departments may be required but without exceeding scope of practice. Scrub color is flexible. Additional notes indicate that ICU acuity patients may be assigned to the floor.
