Description :
Department : Emergency Room with 2 trauma beds and 2 clinic rooms.
No Fast Track available; triage done immediately.
No separate triage area.
No separate holding area in the emergency room; holds are mixed within the emergency room.
No separate psych / seclusion rooms available.
Security is not in-house 24 / 7.
On average, the emergency room treats 12 patients per day.
Nurse to patient ratios are 1 : 1 to 1 : 3, usually assigning one patient at a time.
Staffing includes 3 licensed individuals : 2 RNs and 1 LPN or RN.
Common diagnoses include strokes, myocardial infarctions, and trauma from motor vehicle collisions.
The facility stabilizes and transfers critical patients; the on-call trauma team is rarely activated.
Experience in similar hospital settings is required, and first-time travelers are welcome.
Common intravenous drips include insulin, pain management, and TPA.
Mid-level providers or physician assistants are always available in the emergency room.
One charge nurse or house supervisor may take on a patient assignment.
There are 2 technician positions; one technician assists with patient admissions while the other rotates to different units.
Paramedics are present on all shifts.
Respiratory therapy is available during daytime hours; paramedics manage vents as per medical orders.
Lab services and mid-level providers conduct arterial blood gas draws; EKGs are performed by a secondary nurse.
Each registered nurse is responsible for monitoring their own telemetry.
The nursing station allows visibility of all patient monitors from a central location.
Close proximity to X-ray or CT services is available, with transport arranged as needed.
RN draws labs off intravenous starts as required.
The manager schedules shifts, taking into account preferences and block scheduling.
Weekend requirements include working every other or third weekend, determined for each contract.
Registered nurses may fill holiday gaps as needed.
No standby or call requirements based on low census; if there are no inpatients, all RNs remain on duty.
RNs float to different units when needed.
Dress code permits scrubs in any color without hospital logos.
Unit-specific orientation includes 1 full day in the business office, IT, and resources, plus 2 separate 12-hour orientations for emergency room and other units before working independently.
Charting is completed using a specified system.
Completion of orientation is requisite before assuming independent responsibilities.
