Overview
USDA-ARS Advanced Training in Emerging and High-Consequence Zoonotic Diseases opportunity at Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) in Manhattan, Kansas. This research opportunity invites recent master's graduates to participate in high-consequence and emerging zoonotic pathogen research.
Responsibilities
- Participate in research projects examining the ecology, molecular biology, or computational biology of emerging zoonotic pathogens.
- Design and conduct experiments or analyses under the mentorship of USDA scientists.
- Apply molecular, ecological, or computational tools to better understand pathogen transmission, host–pathogen interactions, or outbreak risk.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across USDA, academic institutions, and federal partners.
- Gain experience preparing scientific reports, presentations, and publications.
Learning environment and facilities
Opportunity to work in USDA's premier high-containment (BSL-4) facility at NBAF in Manhattan, KS, with mentorship from the ZEDRU unit.

Anticipated start date : 2025 (flexible).Appointment length : initially one year; renewal contingent on ARS availability of funds.Level of participation : full time.Stipend : $55,000 – $78,733 per year (master's level).Eligibility and Qualifications
Citizenship : U.S. citizen or Lawful Permanent Resident (LPR) only.Degree : Masters degree received within the last 60 months or currently pursuing.Discipline : relevant fields including biology, microbiology, ecology, computational biology, bioinformatics, epidemiology, veterinary science, or related disciplines.Preferred Skills
Hands-on research experience through master's thesis, lab research, or applied projects.Familiarity with molecular biology, virology, ecology, or computational biology methods.Ability to design and analyze experiments or datasets.Strong scientific writing, reporting, and presentation skills.Experience working in multidisciplinary teams.Interest in pursuing doctoral-level research or professional roles in zoonotic disease or agricultural security.Application process
