Position overview :

This role is for a Senior Network Engineer with emphasis on operational networking, network monitoring, and network management support systems and tools. This position is with a team responsible for the active support of the SLAC network infrastructure that is a crucial element of the research and administration of the facility. Key activities include engineering and support of networking solutions, plus ongoing support and adaptation of existing network management systems and software. Datacenter solutions scale to support extensive clusters of high-performance computing systems. Open source, home grown, and commercial tools are used to manage and monitor switches, routers, firewalls, and related networking devices. Programming is done in Python, Perl, and similar scripting languages in a Linux environment. Open source and commercial database expertise enables storage and assessment of device status and events. Network engineering leverages skills in assessing, isolating, and troubleshooting performance issues, switching in VLAN rich environment, routing protocols OSPF / BGP, and network support protocols such as VPN, SNMP, DNS, NTP, and DHCP. Problems and issues are resolved in a collaborative environment that encourages teamwork and an end-to-end approach.

SLAC is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) laboratory operated by Stanford University and based in Menlo Park, CA.

Your specific responsibilities include :

Under general direction, provide network hardware and software support to users in the computing community. Manage network projects and support the network environments of computer technologies, including voice, data, and / or video / image technologies.

Provide administration and updates of linux systems, scripts, and software used for networking services.

Plan, design, maintain, and implement network access, security, and services.

Manage network projects including developing and documenting technical network designs and project plans.

Monitor network for stability and proper configuration.

Develop products internally in accordance with requirements of performance, suitability, maintainability, cost, interoperability, flexibility, and conformance to standards.

Perform network planning and design, reconfigurations, and equipment installations and upgrades.

Provide support to other consultants in area of technical expertise.

Provide work leadership, escalation, and training to other network specialists.

Identify chronic network problems and develop solutions / repairs.

Evaluate new equipment and research new technologies.

Maintain the security of the network infrastructure and recommend network improvements.

Other duties may also be assigned.

To be successful in this position you will bring :

Bachelor's degree and eight years of relevant experience or a combination of education and relevant experience. In-depth experience in large-scale network design, implementation, analysis, and project management.

Project experience with implementation and configuration of IPv6 addressing and related services.

Excellent oral and written communication skills, with ability to communicate complex technical issues to non-technical users.

Advanced communication skills and ability to influence, persuade, negotiate, and mentor.

Expert knowledge of and experience with multiple network protocols and technologies.

Fine-tuned trouble shooting skills.

Proven project planning and management experience, including ability to manage people.

The expected pay range for this position is $156,963 - $191,459 per annum. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory / Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
