Job description

Building Maintenance Worker

The current vacancy is in the Public Works Department and will be filled at the I or II level based on qualifications of the candidate. This is a Temporary, Non-Benefited position. This position is limited to a maximum of 1,000 hours per fiscal year (July - June). Applications will be reviewed as they are submitted and candidates may be notified immediately for an interview. Class specifications are intended to present a descriptive list of the range of duties performed by employees in the class. To perform a variety of duties in support of the maintenance and repair of municipal buildings, facilities, and grounds; to perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled building trade duties including carpentry, painting, plumbing, heating, electrical and mechanical; to repair necessary playground equipment; and to maintain and operate tools, equipment and vehicles.

Building Maintenance Worker I is the entry level class in the Building Maintenance Worker series. This class is distinguished from the Building Maintenance Worker II by the performance of the more routine tasks and duties assigned to positions within the series including less complex construction, maintenance and repair duties. Since this class is typically used as a training class, employees may have only limited or no directly related work experience.

Key Responsibilities

The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and / or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.

  • Perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled building maintenance duties involved in the repair and maintenance of City buildings, facilities, and grounds; perform and assist in building maintenance tasks involving carpentry, plumbing, heating, electrical and mechanical work.
  • Assist in troubleshooting various electrical problems involving electrical lines, switches, controls and motors; repair and replace electrical fixtures, switches, and related equipment using a variety of materials, tools, supplies, and equipment.
  • Assist in the operation, adjustment, and repair of air conditioning and heating units and components.
  • Perform rough framing and finish work in remodeling offices and other structures.
  • Install, repair and maintain a variety of plumbing fixtures and fittings including water heaters, sinks, showers, water fountains, toilets, faucets, and related equipment.
  • Perform a variety of carpentry duties; repair cabinets, countertops, and other equipment requiring cabinet-making and carpentry tasks; refinish furniture including stripping, staining, and varnishing.
  • Perform general maintenance duties inside and outside of buildings; repair locks, patch roofs and replace tiles; paint inside and outside of buildings; remove graffiti; install door locks; install doors and windows; repair appliances; move furniture.
  • Maintain and repair playground equipment as necessary.
  • Fabricate equipment including welding and brazing.
  • Assist in the supervision of custodial employees; perform custodial work during the absence of regular custodians.
  • Maintain and operate a variety of power and hand tools, equipment and vehicles in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Perform related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be :

Building Maintenance Worker I : Education / Training : Formal or informal education or training that ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance supplemented by training in general building maintenance and repair. Experience : One year of building construction, maintenance and repair experience is desirable. License or Certificate : Possession of an appropriate, valid driver's license.

Building Maintenance Worker II : Education / Training : Formal or informal education or training that ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance supplemented by training in general building maintenance and repair. Experience : Two years of building construction, maintenance and repair experience. License or Certificate : Possession of an appropriate, valid driver's license.

Examination Process

Interested applicants must submit an online application and supplemental questionnaire by the application deadline of 11 : 59 p.m. on Sunday, October 12, 2025. Only those candidates whose qualifications most closely meet the needs of the City will be invited to participate in a skills screening and oral interview. The skills screening may consist of a skills assessment and / or oral interview. Submission of an application does not guarantee participation in the testing and interview process. Eligible candidates will be notified when dates have been established. NOTE : Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a pre-employment medical evaluation, including alcohol / drug screen, and Livescan background check.
