Equipment Operator III

The Town of Merrimack is accepting applications to fill an Equipment Operator III position. Equipment Operator III is responsible for the skilled operation of heavy equipment used in municipal maintenance and construction activities working alone or with minimal supervision. Works under the general supervision of a superior who assigns specific work to be performed; work is carried out with considerable independence and judgment to reach desired result; work may be reviewed through observation, conferences and results obtained. When assignment dictates, provides general supervision as lead worker to small crew of laborers and truck drivers while still responsible for operating own equipment.

Examples of duties include :

• Operates specialized heavy equipment such as road grader or excavator which requires extreme precision in grading and excavating desired elevations and contour for road and other public works construction and maintenance. Operator often works alone or independent from crew; operates specialized equipment in snow plowing operations.
• Services and maintains equipment and makes minor field adjustments and repairs; reports mechanical defects.
• May perform related work as required including occasional unskilled and semi-skilled laboring duties and manual work.
• Performs other related duties as required.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities required include thorough knowledge of and skill in the operation, maintenance, and use of specialized heavy equipment including the operation of such equipment over rough, icy, and unstable surfaces; considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary to safely operate required equipment; ability to recognize and report abnormal operating function of equipment; ability to perform strenuous physical work; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with other employees and the public; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to provide job-related work guidance to other employees.

Minimum qualifications include a high school diploma or GED, three years experience in the operation and maintenance of heavy duty equipment; possession of a valid Commercial Drivers License (CDL-B with Air Brakes endorsement) OR any equivalent education and experience that demonstrated the possession of the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
