Description : Department : MedSurg
Number of beds : 18, with a maximum staffing of 10 at this time.
All rooms are private.
Typical nurse-to-patient ratios are 1 : 6 or less during days and nights.
A ratio of 1 : 8 is rare at night, depending on acuity and staffing levels.
Common diagnoses and types of patients include pneumonia, rehabilitation, urinary tract infections, general post-operative care, pain control, general medical cases, aspiration, fractures, dementia, and falls.
Pediatric patients requiring IV fluids are rare.
RNs are required to titrate drips for a short period but it's not common practice.
Most commonly used titratable drip is Cardizem, but it is rare, and patients usually get transferred to larger facilities.
Nurses receive refreshers on policy and consult pharmacy as needed.
Charge nurses do not typically take assignments but may cover ER or serve as an extra nurse on the floor.
An administrator is available on call.
Nurse aids or patient care techs are present, with one assigned per 8-hour shift.
Their duties include vital signs, ambulation, activities of daily living, and rounding.
Respiratory therapy is not available on this unit, but home CPAP may be utilized.
RNs perform breathing treatments, chest physiotherapy, and patient education.
In emergency situations, RNs may need to bag patients, with assistance from EMS and charge nursing staff.
Nurse RNs must read and interpret their own cardiac strips, as there are no monitor techs.
Staff self-schedule, although contract staff will have schedules aligned with existing rosters.
Weekend requirements typically involve working every third weekend or as specified in the contract.
Holiday requirements rotate among staff.
There is no call or standby requirement.
Floating to other units is not required.
Staff may wear any color or pattern of scrubs, which are not provided.
Unit-specific orientation will be one full 12-hour shift with a preceptor.
Charting is done using Epic Systems Corporation - EpicCare Inpatient.
