Job description

Police Officer

The City of Leawood, Kansas is seeking sworn Police Officers to join their Police Department. Based on experience, applicants can come in as a Police Officer II, III or IV.

Must be a full-time, sworn police officer who has completed a state-certified police academy, or have a valid POST (Peace Officer Standards & Training) certificate, and be within three (3) years of the date of separation from last police agency. All transfers must be eligible for Kansas reciprocity through the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center (KLETC).

The starting salary for a Police Officer II is $49,025.60 and the max salary for a Police Officer IV is $84,032.00.

Summary / Objective

Police Officer provides law enforcement and public safety services to the community to include the enforcement of state and local laws, statutes and ordinances, criminal and crash investigation, crime prevention, and traffic enforcement. Areas of assignment include patrol, traffic enforcement, investigations, DARE / SRO and administration. This position requires independent judgement with superior decision-making skills.

Essential Functions / Responsibilities

Below is a general overview of responsibilities of a Police Officer.

  • Responsible for the enforcement of federal, state and local laws, including traffic ordinances.
  • Assists in the investigation of crimes using state and federal established practices, procedures and techniques. Responsibilities include photographing of crime scene, collection of DNA and physical evidence, fingerprinting and maintaining precise and accurate documentation of investigations.
  • Assists the police department in educating the public on the City's Code, ordinances and state statutes. Responsible for completing clear and concise work related reports in a timely manner.
  • Protects the lives and property of Leawood residents by participating in preventive, proactive patrol by vehicle, bicycle and on foot, including surveillance of high crime / incident areas, after-hours patrol of businesses, and house watches.
  • Investigates vehicular crashes including directing traffic at crashes, coordinating removal of disabled vehicles and dispatching emergency medical personnel if applicable.
  • Administers first aid and emergency medical care to individuals requiring medical assistance when needed until emergency medical personnel arrive on scene.
  • Assists in the investigation of missing persons, civil matters and noise disturbances.
  • Retrieves pertinent information from emergency and non-emergency calls. Accurately communicates pertinent information to other officers and dispatch by radio, using equipment, codes, and procedures properly to ensure clear, concise, and efficient transmission.
  • Responsible for the proper care and use of assigned patrol vehicle, department equipment and weaponry. Maintains and ensures department vehicle, equipment and weaponry is in proper operating condition. Ensures equipment maintenance is completed and follows proper storage procedures.
  • Participates in community outreach initiatives and programs sponsored or facilitated by the police department.
  • Performs non-criminal public safety services to the community.
  • Reviews and trains to maintain current levels of operations knowledge, stays abreast of continuous changes to laws, statutes, and ordinances, enhances knowledge and learning new skills in relation to public safety.
  • May participate in the facilitation or administration of a department program that serves the Police Department and / or promotes the City of Leawood Police Department within the community.
  • Employee may be required to assist in criminal investigations outside of the City of Leawood and / or outside of normal scheduled work hours.
  • Employee may be required to report for duty in response to local, state or national emergency.
  • Employee may be asked by the supervisor to perform other duties that are not listed but are essential to the job.

Minimum Qualifications / Requirements

  • Ability to read, write, and understand the English language with proper spelling and grammar to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to protect and maintain confidentiality of information.
  • Ability to prioritize work and meet deadlines with effective results.
  • Aptitude for operating department equipment and tools.
  • Ability to use safe work practices while on the job, including following proper and established procedures in the use of equipment, and wearing the appropriate and / or required safety and personal protective gear.
  • Ability to work in a stressful emergency environment while wearing heavy personal protective clothing and equipment; work in intense life threatening conditions with the potential for exposure to bodily fluids, noise, and hazardous materials; work in weather extremes such as snow, rain, storms, heat, cold, and any other weather indigenous to the area; make technical and incident management decisions quickly and calmly during stressful conditions.
  • Ability to tactfully and effectively communicate with co-workers, city employees as well as all other people contacted in the performance of their duties.
  • Standard office procedures, systems, and practices including the use of a computer.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Must have the ability to provide credible court testimony.
  • Education, Training, and Certification Requirements

  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must have a minimum of one (1) year of experience as a Police Officer.
  • Must be a full-time, sworn police officer who has completed a state-certified police academy, or have a valid POST (Police Officer Standards & Training) certificate.
  • If transferring from another state, must be eligible for Kansas reciprocity through the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center (KLETC).
  • Must maintain an acceptable discipline, accident, and safety record.
  • Completion of NIMS IS100 and IS700 within 90 days of hire.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record per the City's drivers Use of Vehicles for City Business policy throughout employment with the City.
