The work you will do : Highway Maintenance Tech Coordinator This position will be responsible for maintaining our state roadway system. Your specific responsibilities include coordinating, participating, and directing the maintenance activity of the chemical herbicide program and / or the assembly and erection of highway signs as needed. You will assist in selecting materials, supplies, equipment, inspecting, planning workloads, workflows, deadlines, work objectives and time utilization with employees. You will maintain records of operation. You will prepare and maintain daily paperwork such as crew activity reports and daily vehicle check lists. Upon receipt of the required CDL Instructional permit or license, you will operate vehicles and a variety of medium and heavy equipment. You will perform preventative maintenance and pre-trip and post-trip inspections on equipment operated. You will perform light maintenance and servicing work in connection with any type of equipment operated and assist in the repairs of this equipment; check and add fluids, check / adjust brakes, maintain proper air pressure in all tires, etc. You will perform manual labor in the maintenance of highways, bridges and other highway facilities while utilizing a variety of hand, pneumatic, and electrical tools. You will motivate crew members to improve the quality of work performed and assist in the evaluation of others. You will communicate on a regular basis with employees both individually and in crew meetings. You will train crew members in basic Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic). You will perform Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic).
The successful candidate will have the following required knowledge, skills, and abilities : Knowledge of mathematical calculations, standard safety rules and procedures, the procedures, techniques and use of medium / heavy equipment in the maintenance and repair of highways, bridges, and / or other highway structures, and crew leading principles and practices. Skills in operating a variety of hand and power tools, operating and performing minor maintenance on medium / heavy equipment and vehicles, filling out reports and forms and maintaining accurate records, and communicating both verbally and in writing, including following oral / written instructions. Ability to train others, read and understand job-related materials, develop and maintain effective working relationships with others, lift, carry, and handle up to 50 pounds, stoop, climb, squat, push, pull, crawl or bend on a frequent basis, work outdoors in various weather conditions, on various terrains and at various heights or in high volume traffic, stand for an extended period of time, work independently and make job related decisions.
Other job-related requirements include responding to emergencies and being "on-call" (24-hour duty) when necessary, working with or around Department of Corrections inmates, possessing a valid Class "E" driver's license and obtaining a Class "B" CDL Instructional Permit within 60 days of appointment to the position and obtaining a valid Class "B" CDL with air brakes within 10 months of appointment. Minimum qualifications include possessing a High School Diploma or Certificate of High School Equivalency, one year of experience in infrastructure construction or maintenance, and a Class E driver's license. The driving record will be reviewed and the status of the driver license confirmed. A mandatory drug screening will be performed on the successful applicant. Applicants hired for this position with a Class E license will be required to obtain a Commercial Learners Permit (CLP) within 60 days of appointment, attend CDL training and successfully pass the CDL licensing test and obtain a CDL Class B license with air brakes within 10 months after appointment to the position. Once the CLP is obtained, candidates must register with the FMCSA Clearinghouse, as required, for the Department to conduct a query. Upon hire, the position also requires the applicant to have an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department's Driver's Record Requirements Policy.
