Position Summary
Leroy Surveyors and Engineers is seeking an experienced and motivated Survey Party Chief to lead field survey operations and support office drafting tasks for a variety of land development, construction, and infrastructure projects. The ideal candidate will hold an LSIT certification or demonstrate the ability to obtain one within a reasonable timeframe. This role combines field leadership with foundational Civil 3D drafting skills to ensure accurate data collection and efficient project workflows.
Key Responsibilities
Lead field survey crews in performing boundary, topographic, construction staking, ALTA, and utility surveys.
Interpret engineering plans, survey maps, and project specifications to plan and execute field work accurately.
Operate and oversee the use of total stations, GPS/GNSS receivers, digital levels, scanners, and data collectors.
Collect, organize, and verify field data, ensuring accuracy and adherence to QA/QC standards.
Prepare basic survey drawings, linework, surfaces, and figures using AutoCAD Civil 3D.
Support office staff by reviewing field data, producing base maps, and drafting preliminary survey exhibits.
Maintain detailed field notes, digital records, sketches, and crew documentation.
Train and mentor junior field staff while promoting safe work practices and equipment care.
Communicate effectively with project managers, engineers, contractors, and clients.
Qualifications
LSIT certification or the ability and commitment to obtain an LSIT within a reasonable timeframe (support provided).
Minimum 35 years of surveying experience, including leadership or crew chief responsibilities.
Proficiency with surveying instruments: robotic total stations, GPS/GNSS systems, digital levels, and data collectors.
Foundational experience with AutoCAD, including creating and editing linework; importing and managing survey data; building basic surfaces and point groups; and generating base maps and simple exhibits.
Strong understanding of surveying principles, land boundary concepts, and construction staking practices.
Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, plats, and legal descriptions.
Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and terrain.
Valid drivers license and insurable driving record required.
Preferred Qualifications
Advanced Civil 3D drafting skills (surfaces, corridors, alignments).
Experience with Trimble Business Center, Civil 3D survey databases, or similar software.
Familiarity with Washington State surveying standards and local agency requirements.
