Special Education Teacher – Job Description

Position Summary

The Special Education Teacher is responsible for providing specialized instruction and support to students with disabilities in order to help them achieve their academic, social, emotional, and behavioral goals. The teacher develops and implements Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), collaborates with general education staff, and maintains compliance with state and federal regulations.

Key Responsibilities

Develop, implement, and monitor Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) tailored to student needs.

Provide direct instruction in academic, functional, and social-emotional skills to students with disabilities.

Adapt curriculum, instructional strategies, and learning materials to meet diverse learning styles and abilities.

Collect and analyze student data to track progress toward IEP goals and adjust instruction accordingly.

Collaborate with general education teachers, related service providers, administrators, and parents to ensure student success.

Manage classroom behavior and implement positive behavior support strategies.

Maintain accurate records and prepare reports in compliance with district, state, and federal guidelines.

Participate in IEP meetings, parent-teacher conferences, and professional development activities.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Special Education or related field (Master’s preferred).

Valid state teaching certification in Special Education.

Knowledge of special education laws, including IDEA and Section 504.

Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.

Ability to adapt instructional methods to meet a variety of student needs.

Work Environment

School-based setting (elementary, middle, or high school).

May involve inclusion, resource room, or self-contained classroom models.

Works closely with multidisciplinary teams to support student development.
