Job Description

Charles River Watershed Association (CRWA), an internationally recognized environmental advocacy nonprofit based in Boston, MA, is seeking a Senior Communications Manager or Communications Manager to join our growing team (the job title and corresponding salary level will be determined based on the selected candidate’s qualifications and experience).

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Communications Manager will work with senior staff to set the strategy for all communications to consistently articulate CRWA’s mission, drive CRWA’s advocacy, and support fundraising. The Communications Manager will guide the implementation of the organization’s communications strategy, ensuring that CRWA is viewed as the primary source, disseminator, and conduit of information within our diverse network and constituent base. This position will also work closely with senior leadership as the communications partner on a variety of strategic campaigns. The Communications Manager will manage one staff person.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop, implement, and evaluate an annual organization-wide communications plan to drive and support fundraising, advocacy, and community engagement
  • Create written content or oversee the creation of written content to implement the communications plan, including content for publication in local and national press or other media
  • Work with program staff to design and implement individual communications plans for major campaigns
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of communications activities, including tracking and measuring the level of engagement within our network over time
  • Manage the development, distribution, and maintenance of all print and electronic collateral, including, but not limited to, newsletters, brochures, Annual Report, and CRWA website
  • Mentor and manage communications team member / s
  • Manage and build social media presence
  • Create and execute plan to ensure CRWA is interviewed or referenced regularly via earned media
  • Handle media inquiries and foster relationships with journalists and other media representatives

QUALIFICATIONS

CRWA is seeking an accomplished Communications Manager with 5-10 years of communications experience, preferably within a science-based advocacy nonprofit, and covering areas such as website content, newsletters, press, and donor communications. Successful candidates will have a demonstrated ability to take dense or complex information and transform it into exciting and useful messages and visuals, and disseminate it to the right audiences through the most effective distribution channels.

Specific qualifications include :

  • Highly collaborative style
  • Experience developing and implementing communications strategies and plans
  • Excellent writing / editing and verbal communication skills
  • Photography and / or graphic design experience a plus
  • Experience with social media and digital advertising
  • Ability to successfully manage numerous key initiatives concurrently and keep projects on track and on time
  • Sincere commitment to working collaboratively with all constituent groups, including staff, board members, volunteers, donors, program participants, and other supporters
  • Self-starter, able to work independently, and entrepreneurial; enjoys creating and implementing new initiatives
  • Passion for the mission and work of CRWA
  • Passionate interest in mentoring others and working as a team

    COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

    This is a full-time position based in Boston with competitive salary and benefits, including generous paid time off, a transit stipend, and employer contributions to health insurance premiums and retirement plan. CRWA’s office operates on a hybrid remote / in-person schedule. Starting salary for a Senior Communications Manager is $80,000 annually; starting salary for a Communications Manager is $70,000 annually.
