Job Description
The Lead Driver is responsible for helping the Transportation Supervisor maintain safe and efficient SafeRide and Shuttle operations. This primarily constitutes leading the dispatching duties for services, filling in during driver shift vacancies, helping the Transportation Supervisor to supervise the Hourly Driver staff, and addressing driver needs and concerns. This position will essentially serve as the veteran staffer within the driver/dispatcher staff. The Lead Driver will implement any transportation special projects directed by the Transportation Supervisor. During non-operating periods (primarily summer) the Lead Driver will act as the primary department driver for special event programs, and assist the Transportation Supervisors and Transportation Planner to implement summer projects to enhance the transportation system on campus. Type of Recruitment Knowledge, skills and abilities Considerable knowledge of effective customer service and problem resolution techniques. Basic knowledge of the Commonwealth of Virginia Motor Vehicle laws. Some knowledge of occupational hazards, safety precautions, and regulations related to multi-passenger vehicle operations. Some knowledge of administrative processes, procedures, software and systems used in maintaining records, preparing a variety of documents, and other related administrative activities.
Effective oral and written communication skills, including use of radio communications. Effective time management and organizational skills. Demonstrated ability to use technology including PCs, tablet computers, and network information systems. Demonstrated ability to interpret, inform and follow established Transportation and Parking Services policies and procedures. Demonstrated ability to accurately and legibly complete routine forms and reports. Demonstrated ability to respond quickly using sound judgment to make appropriate decisions in stressful situations. Special licenses, registration or certification Valid Virginia Class ‘C’ Commercial Driver’s License with a ‘P’ [Passenger] endorsement (or other U.S. State- issued Commercial Driver’s License accepted in Virginia, and meeting all minimum Virginia DMV Commercial Driver’s License standards) and insurable driving record. Education or training None Level and type of experience Some experience in passenger transportation, vehicle maintenance, and/or fleet management /operations or other related field. Additional Considerations (supplemental knowledge, skills, abilities, education, experience, licensure, certification) Considerable experience in passenger transportation, vehicle maintenance, and/or fleet management /operations or other related field. Working knowledge of Old Dominion University campus facility’s names and locations, and surrounding neighborhood streets. Conditions of Employment Must possess and maintain a valid Virginia Class C Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Passenger (P) Endorsement. Must have and maintain an insurable driving record in accordance with University and state regulation. Must be available to work daytime and afternoon shifts, including weekends (Monday through Sunday). Must be able and willing to operate vehicles during inclement weather events, including snow, rain, and other adverse condition. Must be willing to work during Special Events, including but not limited to Football Games, Commencement Ceremonies, and other University-sponsored activities as assigned.

The employee occupying this position may be required to work during a university closing as directed by his or her supervisor.
