The role of Assistant Manager at Hy-Vee is centered around supervising and coordinating the activities of employees, ensuring that customer's needs are met. The position requires a growth mindset, results orientation, and a customer-focused approach. The Assistant Manager reports to the District Store Director and Store Manager and is responsible for all positions except those listed above or designated by the Store Director.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities include maintaining a positive attitude, generating a friendly atmosphere through teamwork, and providing prompt, efficient, and friendly customer service. The Assistant Manager is responsible for overseeing training, handling employee issues, and coordinating disciplinary procedures. They assist in determining pricing and blends, manage ad and promotional displays, and ensure store standards for customer service, employee relations, and departmental profitability are met.
Secondary Duties involve determining motivational needs of employees, recruiting and interviewing job applicants, staying current with market trends, and providing continuous education for existing store employees. The Assistant Manager also recommends merchandise additions, deletions, and shelf allocations, pursues retail educational opportunities, and works with department heads on schedules, labor issues, product purchasing, and merchandising.
The position requires the ability to solve practical problems, perform arithmetic calculations, and possess skills in interviewing and following technical manuals. A high school diploma or equivalent and one year or more of retail experience are required. The Assistant Manager must be able to perform medium work, including climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. The role is exposed to dust, noise, temperature extremes, equipment movement hazards, electrical shock, and chemicals.
The Assistant Manager is authorized to purchase merchandise and supplies, order repairs on equipment, and has daily contact with customers, employees, suppliers / vendors, and the general public. They have access to confidential information and employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen.
