Correctional Officer I (Northeast Correctional Complex)
Overview
Corrections professionals in Vermont work in a system that believes in the basics of human change. Intensive training prepares entry level Correctional Officers for a career that blends security work, human services and leadership opportunities. Training
The start of your career in Corrections begins with a week at the correctional facility observing the duties and role of a correctional officer. Then, the next six weeks of instruction are at the Vermont Correctional Academy, where you will learn the core skill set of a corrections professional. After graduation, you will participate in eighty hours of onsite training supervised by staff at your new facility. The start date is based on availability. Positions operate on a 2-shift schedule (6am – 6pm and 6pm – 6am). Shifts and schedules are assigned by seniority first and may be determined by facility needs. AHS Background Checks : Candidates must pass the applicable background investigation. Vermont and / or national criminal record checks, DMV and adult and child abuse registry checks will be conducted as appropriate.
DOC PREA (Prison Rape Elimination Act) Requirements : Applicants must provide information as required by federal regulation. Prior employers may be contacted for verification of work history related to sexual abuse investigations.
Conviction History : Candidates with felony convictions or certain misdemeanor sanctions in the past five years must obtain a waiver to be considered.
Environmental Factors : Duties are performed largely within a correctional facility with potential for high-stress situations and risk of injury. A valid driver's license may be required. Overtime and emergency duty may occur; shift assignments can change with facility needs.
Minimum Qualifications
Minimum Physical Requirements : Adequate physical condition to perform the essential functions, including the ability to don a self-contained breathing apparatus and perform evacuation procedures when required. OSHA standards for respirators apply.
Preferred Qualifications : Experience in a correctional setting; military experience.
Special Requirements : Overtime, weekend and holiday work may be required. Must attend and pass annual mandated training. Background checks and regulatory checks apply as described above.
Total Compensation : The State's compensation package includes extensive benefits totaling about 30% of total compensation, such as medical and dental insurance, holidays, leave, retirement plans, tuition reimbursement, flexible spending accounts, life insurance, wellness programs, and eligibility for Public Service Student Loan Forgiveness.
