Program Highlights
- High-Volume Exposure : Over 6,000 cardiac surgeries annually, including :
- 140+ heart transplants and durable LVAD implantations
- 130+ lung transplants
- Extensive experience with temporary mechanical circulatory support
- Advanced Surgical Training :
- Adult heart and lung transplantation
- LVAD implantation and management
- Complex cardiac reoperations and high-risk procedures with or without mechanical support
- Acute Mechanical Circulatory Support :
- Participation in SHOCK team evaluations for cardiogenic shock
- Selection, insertion and management of temporary MCS devices, including Impella 5.5 and ECMO
- Ex Vivo Lung Perfusion :
- Access to our dedicated in-house EVLP lab for advanced lung transplant training

Clinical Responsibilities
Active participation in candidate evaluation and selection for heart, lung, and combined heart-lung transplantationTechnical surgical training in :Heart and lung transplantationDurable and temporary mechanical circulatory supportPerioperative care of transplant and mechanical support patientsInvolvement in high-risk cardiac surgeries, including those requiring temporary MCSEligibility Requirements
Completion of one of the following :Integrated Thoracic Surgery Residency4+3 Cardiothoracic Surgery ResidencyTraditional Cardiothoracic Surgery Fellowship (2 or 3 years)OR Graduation from a Canadian-accredited Cardiac Surgery ResidencyMust qualify for a full Ohio medical license
