JOB SUMMARY : The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner (Psych NP) will function as a member of a team of health professionals providing integrated services to HOPE’s patients. The Psych NP shall, under appropriate direction and supervision by the Psychiatric Consultant / Supervisor, provide care, assessment, interpretation of data, and shall develop care plans. The following functions are not intended to be all-inclusive or exclusive and shall be directly established by the provider’s privileges as established by HOPE in the provider’s contract and credentialing agreement.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :
- Perform psychiatric evaluations and take histories from patients
- Perform brief screening examinations of patients
- Provide telehealth services and be familiar with telehealth service portals.
- Dispense, prescribe, and administer medications as specified in the HOPE drug formulary protocol for psychiatric nurse practitioners as approved by the appropriate regulatory boards
- Attend team meetings and coordinate care with the Director of Behavioral Health, and the Community Health Coordinator, and HOPE’s primary care providers to improve health outcomes
- Participate in clinical supervision with Psychiatric Consultant / Supervisor, presenting 20% of charts.
- Consult the Psychiatric Consultant / Supervisor as needed for challenging cases
- Facilitate internal referrals for psychotherapy as needed
- Facilitate referrals for other services (e.g. substance abuse treatment centers, community mental health centers, etc.) as needed
- Serve on such committees as directed by senior management
- Provide crisis intervention services as needed
- Maintain accurate and timely records of activities and services stay updated with coding
- Assure the security and confidentiality of all protected health information as required by state and federal law
- Interact with students and residents which might include, but is not limited to, those in college, medical, nursing, mid-level schools and residencies. Precept students
- Develop assessment and treatment protocols and pathways, in consultation with other clinical providers
- Attend in-service trainings on behavioral health topics and present on topics of interest to other staff
- Obtain required continuing education to maintain licensure
- Provide regular, written reports to the Director of Behavioral Health, , or Chief Executive Officer and additional reports as assigned.
This job description is to be used in conjunction with approved duties of psychiatric nurse practitioners as stated by the appropriate licensing body of the State of Tennessee.
INTERMITTENT DUTIES :
Performs other duties that may be assigned by the Supervisor.OFF-SITE WORK :
Off-site work is required occasionally. Telehealth visits from home as needed.This position does have the option to complete various job tasks off-site with prior approval from supervisor. Such tasks may include, but are not limited to the following : chart documentation, phone consults, conference calls, etc.Employees who participate in off-site work are required to have a confidential designated workspace when completing job tasks.Team Leaders will review each employee’s off-site work classification and details during date of hire, at the employee’s annual review, and as needed throughout the year.SKILLS / QUALIFICATIONS :
Must have completed an accredited, Board-approved master’s or post-master’s psychiatric nurse practitioner program or other Board-approved program that awarded an advanced degree or course of study considered by the Board to be equivalent to that required for certification in Tennessee at the time the course was completedMust maintain a current and valid license as a Certified Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner in the State of TennesseeMust maintain a current and valid federal DEA certificate to prescribe controlled substances (Any restrictions, revocations or mandated changes to the Tennessee license or DEA certificate must be reported in writing, within two days, to the Chief Operations Officer of HOPE)Must hold an active certificate issued by the Tennessee State Board of Nursing to practice in TennesseeExperience in outpatient psychiatric practice (in primary care and integrated care settings preferred)Ability to work collaboratively with an inter-disciplinary clinical teamStrong interpersonal, written and oral communication skillsAbility to communicate with diverse audiencesStrong administrative skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook)Criminal background check and clearanceOperate a personal computer.Problem Solving : Frequent problems arise in this position that are outside established policies or bodies of knowledge calling for high-level skills in problem solving.Decision Making : Frequent situations arise in this position calling for careful and analytical judgment.Interpersonal : Must interact with employees, Board of Directors, governmental officials, and the public.Working Conditions : Works in well-lighted, climate-controlled building. May be subjected to appearance in less than desirable environment and travel in adverse weather conditions. May be exposed to body fluids.Physical Requirements : Requires sufficient visual acuity to be able to read and write and operate equipment common to this position. Required to read, write and speak English with the ability to speak a foreign language helpful. Requires sufficient hearing level to be able to effectively communicate with people directly or by telephone.
