Job description

Fountain Valley School, a selective and diverse boarding school, educates 250 students in grades 9–12 on a beautiful 1,100-acre campus in Colorado Springs, CO. Founded in 1930, the School provides a rigorous, global curriculum in academics, arts, athletics and the outdoors.

Position Summary :

The School Counselor will work directly with students and staff to determine the mental health needs of the student, deliver clinical interventions consistent with the needs of the student in a safe and ethical manner and evaluate treatment progress. This person will be committed to providing services that help sustain a student’s mental health in order to promote academic stability and the ability to thrive within the community.  This position will be a 20 hour a week position for 10 months.

Key responsibilities include but are not limited to :

  • Utilize a biopsychosocial model to aid in a comprehensive understanding of the student history, current challenges, and treatment needs.
  • Promote a safe, inclusive, and trauma-informed school climate for all students
  • Provide individual counseling sessions by appointment.
  • Develop and submit treatment plans based on the intake session.
  • Submit thorough clinical documentation in a timely manner.
  • Respond to mental health crises, including suicide risk assessments, following school protocol
  • Collaborate with teachers and administrators, when appropriate, to support student success through case consultation and team meetings
  • Refer students to external mental health resources when appropriate
  • Engage in individual and group consultation with the Director of Counseling
  • Collaborate with the department in designing mental health and wellness programming
  • Regular and reliable in person attendance
  • Other duties as assigned

Knowledge and Skills :

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to balance administrative and support services.
  • Ability to work with individuals in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Ability to remain calm and supportive in stressful situations.
  • Detail oriented, organized, self-motivated, self-directed, and punctual.
  • Ability to work independently, handle multiple projects simultaneously and to prioritize tasks.
  • Education / License Qualifications :

  • Master’s degree in psychology or related field.
  • Strong knowledge of adolescent development, crisis intervention, and evidence-based therapeutic practices
  • Familiarity with issues common to high school students, including identity development, academic pressure, social dynamics, and emerging mental health concerns
  • Maintain current Colorado required licensure or certification.
  • Working Conditions :

  • Environment : Working in a boarding / day secondary school.
  • Physical demands :   Must be able to sit, stand, and walk 8 hrs per day and lift items weighing up to 25 lbs;
  • Working Relationships : Work well community response teams, students, and all other employees.
  • Salary : $30 - $50 an hour, depending on education and experience
