Position Overview
This role supports clinical laboratory operations by performing specimen collection, handling, and processing tasks. The Laboratory Assistant I works closely with Clinical Laboratory Scientists to carry out automated, semi-automated, and manual laboratory procedures, ensuring accurate and timely specimen management.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain a safe and clean work environment, adhering to safety and infection control protocols.
- Collect specimens via venipuncture and capillary sticks.
- Process and transport specimens, including sorting, requisition entry, and distribution to laboratory sections.
- Centrifuge and aliquot specimens into appropriate containers.
- Enter blood culture bottles into instrumentation systems.
- Manage telephone communications, triage calls, take messages, and assist clinicians with report lookups as appropriate.
- Support reception and triage areas within the laboratory as needed.
- Order tests in the Laboratory Information System (LIS) and verify orders with nursing or physician offices when necessary.
- Under supervision, set up and load tests on instruments and perform limited function checks and preventative maintenance.
- Monitor inventory of reagents and supplies, restocking and organizing as required.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
At least one year of relevant laboratory experience preferred.Minimum six months of phlebotomy experience preferred.Familiarity with medical terminology is advantageous.Strong professional communication and interpersonal skills are essential.Education
Meets educational requirements for California CPT Certification.Associate degree or equivalent in life sciences preferred.Certifications
Current California Certified Phlebotomy Technician credential required.All candidates must successfully complete a physical evaluation, drug screening, and background checks prior to employment. Compliance with regional COVID-19 vaccination mandates is required.
