Position Summary :

The Turning Supervisor is a working leader responsible for overseeing all operations within the Turning Department, ensuring parts are produced safely, efficiently, and to Dahlquist’s quality standards. This individual provides day to day leadership to machinists while actively performing setups, programming, troubleshooting, and precision machining work.

The ideal candidate is a hands-on technical expert with CNC turning and CAM programming experience, skilled in twin spindle, live tooling, and twin turret operations, who can balance production priorities, lead by example, and drive continuous improvement in quality, efficiency, and safety.

Key Responsibilities :

  • Leadership & Oversight

Supervise day to day operations of the Turning Department, ensuring schedule adherence and part quality.

  • Lead, train, and mentor machinists in setup, programming, and inspection techniques.
  • Hold team members accountable to quality, efficiency, and attendance expectations while fostering a culture of accountability and respect.
  • Coordinate workflow and prioritize jobs to meet production and delivery goals.
  • Communicate daily with Production, Quality, and Programming to align priorities.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
  • Technical Execution
  • Demonstrate proficiency in Y-axis and live tooling setups, ensuring safe and efficient first-part approvals.

  • Set up and operate CNC turning machines (Doosan and DMG Mori) with twin-spindle, live tooling, and twin turret capabilities.
  • Create, edit, and optimize CNC programs using MDI and / or CAM software to improve efficiency and accuracy.
  • Perform first piece inspections and verify dimensional accuracy before release to production.
  • Troubleshoot machine, tooling, and program issues and assist machinists in problem-solving.
  • Interpret complex 2D drawings and GD&T requirements.
  • Continuous Improvement & Accountability
  • Monitor departmental performance and identify opportunities for process improvement.

  • Standardize setup documentation and best practices to improve repeatability and reduce variation between operators.
  • Collaborate with leadership to improve tooling, fixtures, and programming standards.
  • Support implementation of Lean initiatives and maintain documentation for setups and best practices.
  • Ensure all safety policies and quality standards are consistently followed.
  • Qualifications / Requirements :

  • 5+ years of experience in CNC turning, including setup and programming (Doosan or DMG Mori preferred)
  • Experience with CAM software (such as GibbsCAM or MasterCAM) required
  • Strong proficiency with twin-spindle, live tooling, and twin turret operations
  • Prior experience in a lead or supervisory role strongly preferred
  • Proficiency in reading blueprints and applying GD&T
  • Strong leadership, communication, and team-building skills
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational ability
