Position Summary

Oceaneering Technologies (OTECH) performs a wide range of engineering services and products for unique marine systems for military and commercial customers. OTECH innovates wherever practical rather than inventing making it "faster to field" than others in its industry; the typical development / delivery cycle for complex mechanical, hydraulic, electrical systems is often completed in 12-15 months. Technical capabilities span the entire engineering spectrum. These skills have been demonstrated in successfully delivered systems, including Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs); Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs); saturation diving systems; surface and sub-surface vehicle launch and recovery systems; advanced offshore cranes; Manned submersibles and life support systems.

The Project Systems Safety Engineer will provide guidance to engineering design efforts, with a focus on Software System Safety, through :

\n

  • participation in the development of systems engineering documentation, including concepts of operations (CONOPS), requirements specifications, and interface control documents, but with a focus on.

\n

  • the development of hazard analyses and reliability analyses.
  • \n \n

    In this role you will be supporting continued safe operating analyses of various system configurations as they are developed to meet required capabilities. System Safety engineering is a unique discipline that encourages individuals to (1) analytically examine function, (2) acquire relevant data / information, and (3) justify conclusions in order to model cause and effect relationships of a complex system in various conditions.

    Duties And Responsibilities

  • Produce MIL-STD-882 compliant systems.
  • \n

  • Guide system development and implementation planning through preparation of hazard analysis, failure modes and effects analysis as well as additional reliability, availability and maintainability analyses.
  • \n

  • Conduct system safety analysis to identify, track and mitigate safety critical items.
  • \n

  • Ownership of the following deliverables \n
  • Software Safety Plans.

    \n

  • Functional Hazard Analysis (FHA).
  • \n

  • Preliminary Hazard List (PHL).
  • \n

  • Preliminary Hazard Analysis (PHA).
  • \n

  • Software Safety Assessment.
  • \n \n

    \n

  • Track and report software statement / branch coverage metrics.
  • \n

  • Present software safety results to customers.
  • \n

  • SME in software and systems safety efforts across OTECH.
  • \n

  • Independently analyze and recommend safety criteria in system design, equipment and procedures to mitigate or eliminate
  • \n

  • hazards.
  • \n

  • Evaluate systems, associated support equipment and facilities, networks and information systems to ensure designs meet applicable safety specifications and standards.
  • \n

  • Apply knowledge, methodologies and principles of safety engineering as defined in MIL-STD-882.
  • \n

  • Apply methodologies, best practices and principles of safety engineering as defined in corresponding System Safety Program Plan (SSPP).
  • \n

  • Prepare engineering and technical analyses, reports, and other technical documentation, host internal peer reviews, and facilitate configuration managed releases in support of Manned Submersible System Certification IAW NAVSEA SS800-AG-MAN-010 / P-9290 as well as ABS Rules for Building and Classing Marine Vessels (MVRs).
  • \n

  • Collaborate with Systems Engineering, Software Engineering and System Test & Evaluation organizations to ensure acceptable safety critical function verification.
  • \n

  • Reviews architecture, requirements and interface artifacts for safety on complex hardware / software systems.
  • \n

  • Proactively support planned work for successful on time delivery of safety product(s) i.e., periodically communicate dependencies, progress / blockers with stakeholders.
  • \n

  • Model system function failure conditions with Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) IAW SAE ARP 4761.
  • \n

  • Performs functional analysis, timeline analysis, detailed trade studies, requirements allocation and interface definition studies to translate customer requirements into hardware and software specifications.
  • \n \n

    PREFERRED : \n

  • Has provided system safety engineering, with a focus on software, support on submarine and / or manned submersibles in accordance with US navy requirements such as SS800-AG-MAN-010 / P-9290 and SUBSAFE System Certification Procedures.
  • \n

  • Has provided system safety engineering, with a focus on software, support in accordance with International Association of

  • Classification Societies certification requirements (ABS and / or DNV preferred).
  • \n

  • Displays excellent technical judgment, attention to detail, and ability to look at the "big picture" in system design.
  • \n

  • Demonstrates ability to devise innovative solutions to problems.
  • \n

  • Reviews progress and evaluates results of work accomplished by self.
  • \n

  • Prepares reports and presents results to management and client.
  • \n

  • Schedules can be demanding throughout the year and occasional work outside normal working hours should be anticipated.
  • \n

  • Some travel may be required.

    Qualifications

    REQUIRED : \n

  • BS Degree in Systems Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or related technical field. Commensurate experience will be considered.
  • \n

  • 7+ years of practical experience in systems, safety analyses, software or quality engineering.
  • \n

  • Proficiency understanding the following programming languages : C, C++, C#, Python and / or Java.
  • \n

  • Capable of producing software safety plans and executing to them.
  • \n

  • Attention to detail and interest in designing safety compliant underwater systems.
  • \n

  • Minimum 10 years of practical experience in Systems Engineering.
  • \n

  • Must have greater than 7 years of experience practicing System Safety Engineering
  • \n

  • Minimum 7 years of experience at the design engineering level with : \n
  • Developing sections of systems engineering documentation, including system engineering plans, initial capabilities documents, requirements specifications, and interface control documents.

  • Managing system requirements and derived requirements to ensure the delivery of production systems are compatible with the defined system architectures, including Department of

  • Defense Architecture Framework (DoDAF and Service-oriented Architecture (SOA).

  • Assisting with the development of system requirements, functional requirements, and allocation of the same to individual hardware, software, facility, and personnel components.

  • Participating in the development of system engineering documentation, including system engineering plans, requirements specifications, and interface control documents.
  • \n

  • System requirements and stakeholder needs, including functions that may be logically inferred and implied, as essential to system effectiveness.
  • \n \n

  • Candidate will have to perform in an ISO-9000 rated company in a rapidly changing and demanding atmosphere.
  • \n

  • Must be able to effectively communicate with all levels of leadership and work independently.
  • \n

  • Must have demonstrated and be willing to independently manage multiple tasks with various stakeholders in parallel i.e., assess design changes, field reported issues, system deficiencies, 'pop-up' tasking, etc.

  • Must be independently motivated to learn new methods / practices of analysis.

  • Must be a US citizen.

  • Must have ability to obtain and maintain United States Government Department of Defense (DoD) Secret Clearance.

    COMPUTER SKILLS : \n

  • To perform this job successfully, an individual should have strong knowledge of Microsoft 365 environment.

  • Working knowledge with an SEDB tool (CRADLE, DOORS etc).

  • Working knowledge of MBSE tools (ModelCenter, Cameo)

    PREFERRED : \n

  • Understanding of MIL-STD 882E "Department of Defense Standard Practice System Safety" or equivalent standard.
  • \n

  • Experience conducting safety hazard analyses such as Preliminary Hazard List (PHL), Preliminary Hazard Analysis (PHA), or Functional Hazard Analysis (FHA).
  • \n

  • Experience creating System / Software Safety Assessment Reports and Plans (SSAR).
  • \n

  • Experience with VectorCAST or automated test tools (Jacoco, McCabe, MSTest, NUnit).
  • \n

  • Experience with Jira and Github.
  • \n

  • Solid written and oral communications skills, including ability to effectively document, convey, and present engineering concepts and products to team members and customers.
  • \n

  • Experience with US Department of Defense programs or the field of ocean engineering.
  • \n

  • Ability to grow / enhance a process our product by applying your own unique skillset and perspective.
  • \n

  • An active DoD Secret clearance or higher.
  • \n

  • Familiarity with military Systems Safety and process standards and their Industry equivalent such as : MIL-STD-882, etc.

  • May be widely recognized for achievements, technical expertise, and professional standing within selected field.

    Additional Information

    This position is Hybrid - Remote and will require commuting to a designated office. Hybrid work schedules are determined by the hiring manager based on business need.

    We offer a comprehensive and competitive benefits package. Annualized pay rate for this position : $103,700 - $140,300.
