Position Overview : The Director, Regulatory Affairs is responsible for executing against regulatory strategy on issues impacting the consumer packaged goods (CPG) industry and the association's strategic priorities. The Director will manage complex issues, frame narrative, and serve as a recognized expert and trusted communicator, both internally and externally, within the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) arenas related to food and beverage, household cleaning, and personal care products. Reporting to the Vice President, Regulatory & Technical Affairs, this role will proactively shaping and influencing emerging regulatory policy issues, concerns, and opportunities that enhance the intersection of advancing the CPG industry's agenda and meeting expectations of the American consumer.

Key areas of responsibility :

Regulatory Policy

  • Work collaboratively to monitor the regulatory landscape, both with members of the organization and U.S. regulatory agencies.
  • Proactively identify regulatory affairs issues and opportunities for the CPG industry.
  • Inform, forecast, and develop regulatory policy positions, priorities, member engagement opportunities and advocacy efforts.
  • Proactively cultivate, establish and maintain relationships with members, specific U.S. regulatory agencies, the research community, trade associations, and NGOs.
  • Represent the Association in key regulatory meetings and industry events.

Issues Management

  • Serve as internal subject matter expert on both general and technical expertise, assistance and representation on regulatory issues to both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Provide cross-functional support to key policy initiatives including packaging sustainability, supply chain, and product policy.
  • Lead and participate in discussions and consensus building activities with member companies and stakeholders to inform positioning and advocacy on regulatory, technical, and scientific issues.
  • Analyze proposed regulations, guidance, and other emerging issues impacting the CPG sector.
  • In collaboration with association subject matter experts and outside counsel, advance industry priorities before federal agency leadership, including through direct advocacy, public hearing testimony, presentations, and written comments.
  • Collaborate across departments to develop key external messages to advance regulatory policy positions to public stakeholders.
  • Develop and execute short and long term departmental strategies including the oversight and management of organizational workflows, outputs, and processes.
  • Experience & Education :

  • A minimum of a BA / BS degree is required. An advanced degree such as an MS is preferred.
  • 5-7 years of related employment experience in a relevant industry, trade association, or government agency.
  • Experience in the food and beverage or household cleaning and personal care products space is a plus.
  • 5-7 years of experience with FDA and / or EPA regulatory and policy issues required.
  • A track record of demonstrated results in government, association and / or political environments.
  • Skills :

  • Familiarity with the relevant EPA laws and regulations such as Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA), Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA), etc.
  • Familiarity with the relevant FDA laws and regulations including the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FFDCA).
  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent analytical and decision-making skills.
  • Passion for learning issues and driving results.
  • Public speaking skills and the presence to represent the association and it's position(s) to external stakeholders.
  • Ability to persuasively communicate high-level issues to a technical audience and vice- versa in concise messages.
  • Excellent project management skills.
  • Advanced proficiency in Office 365 Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Excellent customer service skills and email etiquette.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize work.
  • Flexibility in learning new software and / or computer / technical applications.
  • A self-starter with the ability to work independently.
  • Ability to work on cross-functional teams.
