Overview
The Peru Police Department is accepting applications for the position of patrol officer. The purpose of this position is to provide ongoing police services to the people within the City of Peru. This position is very complex and requires the officer to make decisions, take action, and perform processes which are frequently made under conditions of extreme stress. The officer responds to dispatch calls for service covering a variety of areas where an officer might be needed. These dispatch calls are received by the officer in the police car over a two way radio or over a computer aided dispatch program. The types of situations an officer may need to respond to are varied. Additionally, the officer engages in patrolling the general area of the City of Peru and performs duties as it relates to traffic enforcement. This activity is of an ongoing nature and is what the officer will generally do when not responding to calls for service. Furthermore, the officer fulfills the administrative and judicial functions of the position and is required to attend training functions sponsored by the department to improve or maintain the officer's skills.
Responsibilities
- Prepare reports - Maintain records of activities; write narrative reports; keep data logs; ensure secure maintenance of records.
- Maintain Operational Records - Collects job relevant data and compiles information in an organized fashion according to department procedures.
- Uses Computers - Enters data into computer; utilizes computer software; retrieves information stored in computer format.
- Conducts Investigation of Criminal Activity - gathers facts, draws conclusions and analyzes information relevant to incidents of criminal activity.
- Collects / Searches for Evidence at a Crime Scene - gathers and preserves evidence at crime scenes; secures crime scene and detains persons of interest.
- Documents Crime Scene - sketches, photographs, makes audio / video recordings, or writes observations and information relevant to the crime scene.
- Testifies in Court - Consults with prosecutors and orally presents information during court hearings.
- Interviews Witnesses and Suspects - Interviews members of the public about events which surround criminal activity; methods for gathering information may include support interview techniques as well as interrogation methods.
- Operates Vehicle Under Emergency Conditions - Drives department issued vehicle under various and potentially adverse or emergency conditions.
- Makes Arrests - Takes legal control of criminal suspects; may need to exercise reasonable force to control resistant suspects.
- Serves Warrants - Presents legal documents to members of the public.
- Handles Hostile Contacts - Responds to angry and argumentative members of the public in a manner which complies with department regulations.
- Pursues Fleeing Suspects - Pursues and apprehends suspects who flee; may be required to run or operate a vehicle in an emergency manner.
- Reports to Emergency Scenes - Responds to dispatch or calls from the public and provides emergency services as required by an incident.
- Performs Traffic Enforcement - Enforces vehicle traffic regulations; observes traffic conditions and issues traffic citations for traffic law violations.
- Operates Firearms - Qualifies with department issued firearms; maintains weapon and utilizes firearm according to department regulations.
- Interacts With the Public - Meets members of the public; attends public meetings; responds to questions and complaints raised by members of the public.
- Utilizes Police Radio - Uses department radio to communicate with dispatch and other officers.
- Applies Emergency First Aid - Applies life saving first aid or other emergency medical operations to injured individuals while awaiting additional medical assistance.
- Maintains Personal Appearance - Maintains personal grooming and dress according to department regulations.
- Attends Training Sessions - Attends lectures, classes, and other training experiences as required by department regulations.
- Attends Work - Arrives for duty in a punctual and work ready fashion.
- Maintains Equipment - Ensures that equipment needed to perform job is in a clean and operational condition.
- Accepts Supervision - Works cooperatively with members of higher rank; accepts and follows direction.
Qualifications
Shall possess a valid Indiana driver's license (or obtain one within 60 days of becoming an Indiana resident).Shall be a United States CitizenShall be at least 21 years of age and not have reached 40 years of age by date of appointment. Recruitment testing will be held October 25, 2025 at 8 : 00 am. Testing will be performed at the Peru Fire Department 35 W Canal, Peru IN.
