Key Responsibilities:

  • Sign language interpreters facilitate the communication and integration of deaf and hard-of-hearing, or otherwise disabled students and consumers (including faculty, staff and university guests) into the classroom, other instructional settings, and into the university community either by way of American Sign language (ASL), or Signed English, Transliteration (a manual, oral, or tactile system of communication).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of American Sign Language or other sign system required by the student or the assignment.
  • Knowledge of the methods and techniques used in communicating with hearing-impaired persons.
  • Knowledge of the Code of Ethics prepared by the National Registry for Interpreters for the Deaf.
  • Some assignments may require knowledge of professional and technical signs or knowledge of the vocabulary used in the courses to which assigned.
  • Ability to hear spoken speech communication.
  • Ability to use American Sign Language or other sign systems.
  • Ability to interpret spoken English (spoken to visible) at a rate appropriate to the assignment.
  • Ability to interpret visible to spoken communication at a rate appropriate to the assignment.
  • Ability to transliterate by providing vocal expression of a hearing-impaired speaker to hearing persons.
  • Ability to interpret or transliterate for a group of speaking and non-speaking persons.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Three years of experience preferred.
  • Combination of experience and training equivalent to those prescribed for certification in one of the following categories: Interpreter Certificate, Transliterator Certificate, Comprehensive Skills Certificate, or one of the Oral Transliterator Certificates.
