Job description

Lincoln, NE - Unique Maintenance Mechanic

Do you love building and creating? We're looking for an experienced and passionate individual to join our team and help us create a fun, safe, and engaging environment for all of our guests.

This role is a unique mix of hands-on work and management, where you'll be responsible for bringing new exhibits to life while also ensuring our building and grounds are well-maintained. You'll lead a small team and play a key part in a dynamic organization that's dedicated to creating enriching experiences for the community.

What You'll Do

Exhibit Development & Maintenance

  • Dream it, build it : Work with our team to plan, design, and create new exhibits from the ground up, bringing innovative and educational ideas to life.
  • Keep it running : Ensure all exhibits are safe and fully functional through daily inspections, preventative maintenance, and timely repairs.
  • Manage the magic : Oversee the installation and removal of traveling and temporary exhibits, and manage our on-site fabrication shop, ensuring we have the right tools and materials to get the job done.
  • Team up : Partner with vendors and contractors to keep our exhibit spaces in top shape.

Facilities Management

  • Maintain our home : Oversee all building and grounds maintenance, from landscaping to managing the museum's HVAC, electrical, and plumbing systems.
  • Stay safe : Manage our security features, including cameras and alarms, and serve as the point person for all health and safety standards.
  • Handle the details : Take care of essential services like waste disposal, recycling, and snow removal, and oversee all custodial needs.
  • Be a planner : Manage budgets, review contracts, and find new ways to improve efficiency and reduce costs.
  • Leadership

  • Build a great team : You'll hire, train, and mentor our exhibits and facilities staff.
  • Set the pace : Provide direction and guidance to your team, ensuring projects are completed efficiently and effectively.
  • What You'll Bring

    Required Skills

  • A passion for our mission and the work we do.
  • At least 2 years of experience in carpentry and fabrication, with a strong understanding of electrical and mechanical systems.
  • 2-4 years of experience in a supervisory role.
  • Excellent planning and project management skills, including budgeting and working with contractors.
  • Experience in facility operations and maintenance.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
  • A flexible, collaborative, and creative mindset.
  • A valid driver's license.
  • Preferred Skills

  • Experience developing interactive museum exhibits from start to finish.
  • Knowledge of advanced fabrication techniques, including working with plastics, metals, and welding.
  • Experience with 3D design software (like AutoCAD or SketchUp).
  • A background in construction or facilities maintenance.
