The Stroke Center at NYU Langone HospitalSuffolk is designated by the New York State Department Of Health as a Primary Stroke Center, with expert neurologists available to provide treatment 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Additionally, NYU Langone HospitalSuffolk has multiple outpatient sites, including an outpatient wound care center, a hemodialysis center, and various primary care and specialty offices.

Position Summary : We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Periop Medical Assistant - Pre Admission Testing - per diem. Under the direction and supervision of the registered nurse, assists the nursing and medical staff by performing identified services and established procedures to provide for the care, comfort and safety of patients. In addition performs selected procedures, such as EKG and venipuncture. Maintains patient care areas in a clean and orderly condition; prepares equipment and supplies according to established procedure and transports patients as needed. Participates in the orientation process of new employees.

Job Responsibilities :

• Correctly identifies patients needing specimen collection / procedures according to the patient's identification and allergy bracelet.
• Accurately collects and labels all specimens according to established procedure.
• Assess and evaluates patient in choosing the correct venipuncture site, properly positions patient for the procedure.
• Prepares the patient by informing him / her of the procedure and next steps.
• Prepares phlebotomy equipment, including correct tubes for tests ordered and draws specimens according to correct order of drawer.
• Labels all specimens according to established procedure. Initials and times all tubes. Uses signature and time for blood bank tubes.
• Ensures that the patient is bandaged as needed; is returned to a safe position and notifies the patient's nurse if an untoward reaction occurred.
• Discard safely needle / lancet in accordance with established policy and procedure.
• Process' specimens for transportation by pneumatic tube for analysis within 2 hours of collection and according to hospital and infection control procedures.
• Notifies Nurse if unable to obtain specimens.
• Performs EKG procedure within 10 minutes of original stat order.
• Facilitates the patient testing procedure by entering orders.
• Supports the delivery of patient care by providing a patient care environment that is properly stocked with supplies and properly functioning equipment.
• Institutes measures that support patient and staff safety.
• Need to exhibit a genuine commitment to caring for our patients and assist them to have a positive patient experience.

Minimum Qualifications : To qualify you must have a High School diploma or GED Must have one of the following : Certificate from an approved MA training program, or Phlebotomy certificate, or Five years prior hospital or sub-acute experience, or Medical Technician Associate Degree. Ability to make independent decisions which impact upon work flow, identification of changing patient needs and consequences of role as they relate to actions of entire medical team. Interpersonal skills necessary to effectively interact with patients and their families that demonstrate recognition of cultural diversity. Basic analytical skills in order to gather data, complete comparisons, interpret and report outcomes to the nurse or document on the medical record. Must have excellent customer service and telephone skills Ability to manage and perform multiple tasks simultaneously in a changing work environment. Basic computer skills. Ability to maintain focused attention to detail. BLS certification, de-escalation and first aid training.

Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, specialty, education, and hospital need.
