Beach Patrol Officer
Patrols the sections of public beach that are approved by the Mayor and City Council as Surfing Beaches to promote safety and prevent illegal conduct. Duties include educating the surfing and swimming public about the Surfing Beach regulations, responding to emergencies on the beach, administering first aid, and enforcing ordinances and surfing beach boundaries and rules.
Supervisory Responsibilities : None. May assist in training newly hired employees.

Education and / or Experience : Graduation from an accredited high school or GED is desirable. Previous experience as a lifeguard or service industry employee is preferred.
Language Skills : Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating instructions, ordinances, activity reports and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports, correspondence and document forms. Ability to speak effectively with those seeking service or explanations of Surfing Beach activities, and to issue intelligible and timely warnings and directions to beach patrons and fellow workers.
Mathematical Skills : Ability to understand and apply concepts such as percentages, area, distances, counting and addition. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
Reasoning Ability : Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to effectively prioritize tasks in stressful situations. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations : CPR & basic first aid certifications are provided during the paid Surf Rescue Academy, valid Driver's License preferred.
Physical Demands : While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk quickly for distances of several hundred yards in soft sand. The employee may be required to walk or stand continually for as much as seven hours out of an eight-hour shift. The employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to stoop, kneel or crouch. The employee is required to sit, climb, balance and must frequently lift and / or move up to 100 pounds and occasionally move more than 100 pounds.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
Work Environment : While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to wet and / or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, outside weather conditions and vibrations. The employee is often exposed to high, precarious places and risk of electrical shock. A risk of radiation is possible due to prolonged exposure to the sun. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, but occasionally very high due to the whistle blowing required of the job.
