Primary Purpose
Serve as a communication facilitator of all communication between the auditorily impaired student, hearing peers, and the special education teachers in a variety of educational settings.
Qualifications
- High School diploma or GED
- Valid Texas Educational Aide Certification
- Para-Pro Test (No Child Left Behind) / 48 College Hours
Special Knowledge / Skills
Willingness to participate in training programs and on-the-job training to meet educational and communication needs of impaired students in special education classes and special vocational classes as neededBasic sign language skills required to assist auditorily impaired students in communicating with all persons in the special education settingSufficient physical stamina to ensure the comfort and safety of handicapped students; sufficient sign language skills for positionMajor Duties And Responsibilities
Uphold and enforce school rules, administrative regulations, and state and local Board PolicyServe as a communication facilitator in a variety of special education classesProvide a language rich experience including sign language, gestures, verbal communication, picture and icon systems to assist students in developing an independent communication systemInform the responsible teacher and appropriate staff of any problems that may occur in the classroomWork with mainstream teachers, as needed, in order to be better prepared for the classroomAssist with materials, classroom routines and organization as directedHelp monitor student activitiesAssist with data collection and progress monitoring of skillsAssist students with physical needs and personal care including feeding, bathroom needs, and personal hygieneAssist in managing the behavior of students and crisis intervention, including restraining disruptive or dangerous physical behavior as neededAssist teachers between assignments working with students as needed or performing clerical dutiesMaintain confidentialityParticipate in staff development training programs, faculty meetings, and special events as neededPerform other duties as assignedEquipment Used
