Job description

Overview

Memorial Hermann Health System seeks a Senior Medical Laboratory Specialist with expertise in Hematology and COAG. Position home base is Southwest Campus. Travel to other facilities as required for meetings and as needed. Experience with UA and Flow Cytometry are also highly desired but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Provide, maintain, and support Laboratory Services Quality Management program. Oversees Lab Quality across the System in Transfusion Medicine, Hematology / Flow Cytometry / Coagulation / Urinalysis, Chemistry / Immunology, Molecular / Microbiology, and Point-of-care. Focus on disciplines across the system to provide standardization and oversight of these standards to ensure quality and compliance.
  • Provide global oversight and assure standardization by discipline for quality control, proficiency testing, maintenance, procedures / policies, regulatory standards, education.
  • Oversee system quality program by leading Laboratory Services' Technical Team's initiatives for assigned discipline. Manage proficiency orders and review all proficiency data and exception reports to comply within CAP guidelines. Coordinate non-proficiency testing for accuracy.
  • Ensure operations comply with conditions and standards set forth by regulatory agencies (TJC, FDA, CAP, AABB, HCFA, OSHA, CLIA).
  • Prepare QA / QI reports for the Monthly Operating Report and System Laboratory Services Quality Plan (e.g., turnaround times, red arm bands, critical values).
  • Provide computer support for test table and quality control builds.
  • Analyze quality control data and benchmark from System facilities and peer groups; summarize for Laboratory Directors, Laboratory Vice President, and Medical Directors as applicable.
  • Lead execution of function and equipment checks; ensure a safe environment by performing safety checks and gathering safety data for QA reports.
  • Supervise evaluation of new instrumentation, new methods, new reagents and quality control; perform validations of analyzers and document precision and accuracy.
  • Collaborate with System Laboratory Services Quality and Education Director to support the System Quality Initiative and Programs.
  • Build and maintain relationships with Laboratory and Medical Directors and other management; model Memorial Hermann service standards and customer service initiatives.
  • Monitor and assure training and competency assessment regulations compliance; promote patient and staff safety; adhere to policies within budget, time and resource constraints.
  • Promote professional growth and development; serve as preceptor / mentor; contribute to department goals.

Qualifications

  • Education : Bachelor's degree in a biological science required (equivalency required for foreign education).
  • Licenses / Certifications :
  • Medical Technologist (ASCP) or Medical Technologist (AMT) required

  • Certified CLS (ASCP), Certified MLS (ASCP or ASCP-International) CM or Discipline Specific ASCP Certification required
  • Experience / Knowledge / Skills :
  • Minimum of five (5) years clinical laboratory experience including responsibilities in a lead / senior role required.

  • One or more years of experience specializing in Lab Quality Management required.
