Departmental Overview

The International House is a self-supporting residential and program center for up to 600 international and United States students and scholars from the Berkeley campus. Its mission is to foster intercultural understanding and respect among people throughout the world across cultural, economic, and racial lines. A professional staff, that are University of California employees, supports the mission of the House. In non-employment respects, the Institution functions as a not-for-profit 501C3 educational corporation.

The building, constructed in 1929, is approximately 200,000 square feet and operates year-round. Although the building is the property of The Regents of the University of California, the maintenance and non-structural improvements are the responsibility of The Regents but outside contractors work closely with the Physical Plant staff. The building has 8 floors, 5 elevators, 490 rooms / offices, 600 plumbing fixtures, 3 guestrooms, a dining room and dining facility serving approximately 400,000 meals annually, and a Cafe.

Position Summary

Under the general supervision of unit managers and supervisors, this position supports the receiving, ordering, storage, and distribution functions of the International House Hospitality Department. The role ensures accurate receipt, inspection, and storage of all incoming goods, maintaining product quality, safety, and inventory accuracy in compliance with department and university standards.

Responsibilities include monitoring inventory levels, restocking products using FIFO (First In, First Out) procedures, retrieving supplies from remote locations as needed, and maintaining cleanliness and organization in all storage and work areas. The position interacts regularly with vendors, delivery drivers, and internal staff to coordinate deliveries, resolve discrepancies, and maintain proper documentation and invoice accuracy.

This position also assists culinary and service staff by preparing ingredients, supporting production needs, and participating in scheduled inventory counts. The employee operates University vehicles for deliveries or pickups as assigned and follows all safety, sanitation, and traffic guidelines. Additionally, the role contributes to maintaining a clean, safe, and efficient working environment by adhering to cleaning protocols, chemical safety standards, and preventive maintenance schedules.

The position requires strong customer service skills, professionalism, and teamwork to foster a cooperative and service-oriented workplace.

Responsibilities

Receiving :

  • Monitor loading areas to ensure vehicle access and safety.
  • Uphold the security of receiving areas, coolers, freezers, and storerooms.
  • Receive all food and non-food products from vendors and delivery drivers.
  • Inspect incoming shipments for accuracy, quality, safety, and compliance with purchase specifications.
  • Report any discrepancies, damaged items, credits, returns, or invoice adjustments to the supervisor promptly.
  • Retrieve products from remote locations as necessary to maintain operational readiness.
  • Date and rotate all inventory items using First In, First Out (FIFO) principles.
  • Ensure all bulk products are labeled accurately when removed from boxes.
  • Complete required temperature, sanitizer, and safety logs for all incoming products.

Storing :

  • Store all food and non-food products in designated areas following HACCP and safety guidelines.
  • Maintain organization, cleanliness, and safety of all storage, staging, and dock areas.
  • Stock shelves, coolers, and freezers with ingredients and supplies according to FIFO rotation.
  • Monitor and communicate product code dates to ensure freshness and prevent waste.
  • Maintain clean, organized, and safe preparation, storage, and service areas at all times.
  • Safely handle and store cleaning chemicals following Safety Data Sheet (SDS) guidelines.
  • Monitor and maintain equipment for safe operation; report malfunctions or repair needs promptly.
  • Distribution :

  • Issue all food and non-food products to staff to support daily operations.
  • Load and unload supplies and equipment in staging areas, walk-in freezers, and other storage areas using hand trucks, pallet jacks as required; confirm the number of parcels for each delivery.
  • Coordinate with vendors and delivery drivers to meet departmental supply needs. Operate University-assigned vehicles to pick up or deliver goods on or off campus, adhering to traffic and safety regulations.
  • Transfer supplies to other units as required.
  • Assist manager with inventory management, ordering, and planning supply distribution using a computerized food management system.
  • Properly dispose of waste, compost, and recyclables, minimizing unnecessary product or food waste.
  • Must clean, staging and dock area before shift ends.
  • Safety :

  • Adhere to all university and departmental safety guidelines.
  • Attend job-related and safety training as required.
  • Assist in maintaining the Storehouse in a clean, safe, and orderly manner by storing chemicals and other hazardous items according to OSHA and Environmental Health and Safety standards.
  • Dispose of emptied pallets and packing material properly, leaving common areas of transit clear and hazard free.
  • Other Duties as Assigned :

  • Participate in scheduled inventory counts and assist with reconciliation as assigned. Assist culinary and service staff by preparing ingredients, supplies, and products as needed.
  • Provide training and support to less experienced staff and student assistants; guide, delegate, and assign tasks as appropriate.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor to support smooth operations of the department.
  • Required Qualifications

  • Ability to operate other material handling equipment up to 6000-pound capacity.
  • Ability to work outdoors in fluctuating and / or extreme weather conditions.
  • Must be available to respond to emergencies and work occasional overtime and on weekends / holidays.
  • Adhere to Facilities Services' work rules and Code of Conduct.
  • Employee is personally responsible for following health and safety guidelines / instructions.
  • ServSafe Certification.
  • Ability to read and write English and perform basic arithmetical calculations.
  • Ability to lift up to 75 pounds, perform heavy manual tasks, and be capable of performing inside and outside duties under all weather conditions.
  • High school diploma and / or equivalent experience / training.

    Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

    The budgeted hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $25.31 (Step 1) - $34.04 (Step 17).
