PLANNING
Department : Community and Economic Development
Division : Planning
Rate of pay : $17.00 - $18.00 per hour, depending on qualifications.
Work hours : This is a part-time position. Must be available to work flexible hours, up to 29 hours per week.
GENERAL PURPOSE
The Planning assists full-time land use planners in creating and modifying land use plans, in evaluating land use proposals, and in engaging with the public. The gains valuable on-the-job experience to support their post-high school training in land use planning or related fields.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Assist with public outreach in planning, such as creating and distributing notices, newsletters, website information and e-mails, arranging, attending and supporting public meetings, creating and compiling surveys, and maintaining contact lists.
- Compile data on land uses, population, demographics, trends, and other land use information.
- Conduct field surveys of land uses.
- Research and report on a variety of planning related topics.
- Develop maps, graphics, posters, brochures, and other communications.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
High school diploma or equivalentTwo years post-high school educationEnrollment in a college, university, or technical school program leading to a bachelor's or advanced degree in land use planning, geography, architecture, sustainability, landscape architecture, or closely related field.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of :
Basic concepts of city and regional planning through post-high school instructionReport writing techniquesModern office methods, practices and procedures including use of computers. Understanding of various computer graphic systems or GIS helpfulAbility to :

The work is in both an office environment and outdoors. In the office environment, noise and temperature levels are moderate. Work in the outdoor environment may include exposure to varied temperatures and weather conditions.This work requires exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and / or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body.Must possess the visual ability to see clearly at close (less than 20 inches) and far (20 feet or more) distances, and judge distances and spatial relationships.Additionally, the following physical abilities are required : standing, walking, sitting, using hands and fingers to handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms, stooping, kneeling, crouching, talking, and hearing.SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
