Janitor / Custodian
To perform cleaning tasks in such a manner that there will be minimum interruption in, or interference with, facility operations.
Physical dexterity; fine and gross motor ability. Must be able to follow written or oral directions. Must be able to pick up and move objects weighing 50 lbs. or less; stoop, kneel, reach, climb, handle, and be capable of successfully carrying out and completing cleaning duties unsupervised.
No specific education, training, or experience required; however, high school diploma preferred. Training or experience performing janitorial tasks is preferred. Government security clearance may be required.
No supervisory requirements, but may show another staff person how to perform a task. Has contact with the public; therefore, tact and courtesy is essential. Must demonstrate appropriate work behaviors at all times.
Must be able to understand and carry out a sequence of steps given orally, by sign language, or in written form. Work is well defined and s / he must be able to follow a daily and weekly schedule, must be aware of and obey all safety hazards. S / he should be willing to and capable of learning how to sweep, mop, vacuum, dust, lift, and empty trash, clean bathrooms, and / or operate designated types of commercial cleaning equipment. These tasks must be performed according to standards as described in the Scope of Work.
Usually involves repetitive situations that are solved in the same way by using a choice of learned options. Will require arriving at some solutions by using own judgment.
Supervision will be intermittent. Completion of tasks according to direction and in a timely manner has impact on the overall success of the contract.
Dust, mop, damp mop, and vacuum floors. Clean restrooms. This includes emptying trash, cleaning toilets, urinals, and sinks, filling dispensers, sweeping, mopping, and wiping walls and partitions. Clean glass, stair rails, and clean walls in corridors and stairwells. Wash lights and fixtures. Notify supervisor when supplies are low or when there is a problem with equipment. Buff floors. Operate designated types of cleaning equipment. Maintain self and clothing in a neat and clean manner and comply with uniform regulations.
Attend in-service training as required. Assist with snow removal as required. Other duties as assigned. Must be willing to work various shifts and weekends and holidays.
