Job Summary
The Tax Senior Manager, SALT – Credits & Incentives advises clients on credit and incentive opportunities that align with their business objectives. Responsibilities include recommending alternative courses of action, identifying compliant methods of addressing credit & incentive statutes, and monitoring policy changes. The role encompasses marketing, networking, and business development within the SALT specialty, while collaborating with Core Tax Principals and Directors to deliver subject‑matter expertise to clients.
Job Duties
Research :
- Identify complex credits & incentives situations; outline the issue(s) and appropriate research sources.
- Analyze researched facts and sources before composing a detailed report or preparing a credits & incentives opportunities matrix.
- Develop relationships with in‑state and out‑of‑state Department of Tax (DOT) / Department of Revenue (DOR) and Economic Development personnel.
Tax Compliance :
Review income tax returns in detail to identify significant statutory credit opportunities.Evaluate client’s compliance processes and provide customized, automated solutions for annual credits & incentives reporting.Tax Consulting :
Draft credits & incentives memorandums and other documentation on various issues.Review client operations to determine jurisdictional credits & incentives opportunities.Apply all applicable state tax consulting sub‑specialties and confer with other STS professionals when appropriate.Ensure tax engagement letters are adopted prior to work commencement and manage engagements.Assist in developing consultative credits & incentives strategies.Manage client expectations.Tax Controversy :
Draft responses to notices from state taxing authorities.Represent clients before any tax authority on credits & incentives issues.Provide assistance with exam support.Tax Related Software :
Utilize credits & incentives research databases and related software for task completion.Tax Specialization :
Provide technical client service to multi‑state companies on credits & incentives matters.Conduct negotiation on credits & incentives matters.Draft technical memoranda regarding credits & incentives issues.Strategy Development :
Review studies of credits & incentives opportunities to identify alternative courses of action that benefit clients.Develop new or improved ideas to advance clients’ positions in maximizing credits & incentives awards.Assist with researching credits & incentives strategies.Suggest marketing approaches for new client acquisition.Other duties as required.Supervisory Responsibilities
Supervise the day‑to‑day workload of STS SALT Senior Associates, Associates, and Interns on assigned engagements and review work product.Ensure all team members are trained on relevant tax software.Evaluate performance and assist in goal setting to enhance professional development.Deliver periodic performance feedback and complete evaluations for all STS SALT staff.Act as a career advisor to STS SALT Senior Associates and Associates as appropriate.Education
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or a related field, required.
Master’s degree in Accounting / Taxation or J.D., preferred.
Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Eight (8) or more years of prior state and local / multistate experience in the credits & incentives area.Prior experience supervising tax professionals on a project or engagement basis.Prior experience preparing and / or reviewing tax provisions, preferred.CPA certification or other relevant certification, required.Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel and Word, required.Exposure to and familiarity with standard tax applications and research tools, preferred.Excellent verbal and written communication skills.Superior analytical and research skills.Solid organizational skills with the ability to meet project deadlines and focus on details.Ability to multi‑task independently or within a group environment.Proven ability to work in a deadline‑driven environment and manage multiple projects simultaneously.Capacity to manage and delegate work to a team of tax professionals.Capability to build and maintain strong relationships with internal and client personnel.Executive presence and ability to act as a primary contact on engagements.Advanced knowledge of appropriate tax standards and sources for credits & incentives filings.Advanced knowledge of the cause / effect of taxable conditions and potential credits & incentives opportunities.Salary Range
National : $99,750 – $262,500 per year.
Maryland : $99,750 – $262,500 per year.
NYC / Long Island / Westchester : $99,750 – $262,500 per year.
Washington DC : $99,750 – $262,500 per year.
