As Director, Procurement, Clinical Development you will be the Category Group Head for Specialized Services & Engagement Strategy. You will lead a team of procurement professionals to execute transformative strategies, tailoring and implementing them within the Regulatory, Safety, and Clinical Sciences domains among other niche areas. The role requires strong business acumen and the ability to influence across functions, ensuring that enterprise procurement practices are effectively adopted and optimized through technology, analytics, and supplier partnerships. This leader will help foster innovation through mechanisms such as Innovation Councils, Category Steering Committees, and cross enterprise governance forums that align strategy, performance, and supplier collaboration toward improved quality and delivery outcomes.
This role leads the procurement category strategy across Regulatory, Safety, and Clinical Sciences (and other niche areas) spanning supplier partnerships that enable regulatory submissions, pharmacovigilance, patient safety, and clinical science services. This role requires an understanding of regulatory and patient safety dynamics to ensure optimal support to internal teams. The Director serves on the CDP Leadership Team and the R&D Procurement Extended Leadership Team.
Major Responsibilities and Accountabilities :
Contracting, Strategic Sourcing, and Category Management
- Provide leadership and direction across multiple categories and therapeutic areas, ensuring alignment with departmental strategy and enterprise objectives.
- Oversee and approve complex procurement activitiesincluding review, drafting, negotiation, and redlining of supplier proposalsacross novel or technically complex categories with limited legal supervision.
- Lead cross-functional and cross-regional teams to deliver integrated sourcing strategies and ensure successful program execution.
- Accountable for delivering measurable value and productivity outcomes through data-driven category strategies.
- Serve as an accountable point of contact for internal Clinical Development leaders, external industry partners, and strategic suppliers, ensuring alignment and partnership continuity.
- Present strategic recommendations, data insights, and program updates to senior leadership, providing clear options and rationale to support business decisions.
- Establish and maintain structured management frameworks that support accountability, operational discipline, and continuous improvement across the function.
Stakeholder Engagement, Cross Functional Excellence & Communication
Deliver best-in-class stakeholder engagement across internal and external partners, ensuring alignment, transparency, and shared accountability in advancing CDP priorities.Lead the design and implementation of a supplier engagement framework that supports CDP's participation in governance forums and strategic committeesincluding the Senior Management Committee (SMC), Innovation Council, and related cross-functional councils.Represent and partner across BMS to coordinate CDP's contributions to enterprise workstreams and lead modernization initiatives to digitize procurement, strengthen supplier ecosystems, and scale next-generation procurement capabilities.Oversee special projects and strategic initiatives, managing multiple priorities and ensuring delivery within scope, timeline, and quality expectations.Communicate strategies, initiatives, and performance outcomes to senior executives, ensuring visibility of procurement's contribution to R&D success.Act as a trusted advisor to the business by providing actionable insights, innovative solutions, and expert counsel on complex procurement matters.Foster external partnerships with suppliers and industry consortia to benchmark best practices and identify collaboration opportunities.Supplier Performance and Risk Management
Partner to deliver supplier segmentation and formalize Supplier Relationship Management (SRM) programs for key strategic partners.Co-define value-creation targets with business stakeholders and ensure regular performance reviews with measurable outcomes across respective categories.Proactively identify, assess, and mitigate supplier and supply-chain risks, ensuring resilience and continuity of critical R&D operations.Cost Management and Value Optimization
Drive cost-reduction, value-enhancement, and productivity initiatives across assigned research and development categories.Develop, monitor, and forecast budgets, ensuring adherence to financial targets and alignment with enterprise investment priorities.Lead negotiations and strategic deal structuring to secure optimal commercial terms, value delivery, and risk balance across supplier portfolios.Governance and Compliance
Establish and maintain governance structures that drive disciplined decision-making, transparency, and compliance with corporate and regulatory standards.Monitor adherence to contractual, financial, and ethical requirements, partnering closely with Legal, Privacy, and Compliance.Provide regular reporting and performance insights to senior leadership, highlighting progress, risks, and mitigation strategies.Leadership and Team Development
Lead and develop a team of procurement professionals, ensuring clear accountability, effective delegation, and alignment with department goals.Provide coaching, performance management, and individual development planning to strengthen capabilities and engagement.Define organizational roles and succession plans to ensure a sustainable pipeline of procurement talent.Innovation and Continuous Improvement
Drive innovation through adoption of advanced procurement practices, automation, and emerging digital technologies.Lead continuous-improvement programs to enhance efficiency, transparency, and scalability of procurement operations.Champion data-driven decision-making and leverage analytics to inform sourcing strategies and supplier performance.Stay abreast of industry trends and market evolution to ensure BMS maintains a leadership position in R&D procurement excellence.Qualifications
Minimum Requirements
Minimum education of a B.S. / B.A. is required; M.S. / M.B.A. preferred.Minimum of ten (10) plus years of relevant biopharmaceutical, life sciences, or related industry experience, with strategic procurement or sourcing leadershipor comparable function experience preferred.Proven track record managing / leading cross-functional teams, managing senior stakeholder relationships, and delivering large-scale transformation initiatives.Management experience establishing performance expectations including prior R&D experience in the biopharmaceutical, pharmaceutical, and / or medical device industry.Extensive knowledge of category management and advanced strategic sourcing methodologies.Demonstrated success leading global cross-functional project teams to generate material value across multiple complex categories.Documented experience leading cost reduction, value improvement programs and large change management projects.Travel Requirements : Travel may be required (domestic and international) for business meetings, supplier visits, and cross functional engagements as needed.Uniquely Interesting Work, Life-changing Careers With a single vision as inspiring as "Transforming patients' lives through science ", every BMS employee plays an integral role in work that goes far beyond ordinary.
