POSITION SUMMARY :
Under the direction of the ELC Director, in accordance with the goals of the Olean YMCA and the regulations of the New York State Office of Children and Family Services, the Teacher Assistant is responsible for the daily operation of their assigned room in the Early Learning Center.
This position also treats everyone with courtesy, respect and consideration; displays integrity; listens actively and genuinely; communicates in a clear and pleasant manner; embraces differences among people; demonstrates an active willingness to learn and grow; accepts constructive criticism; works cooperatively as a team member.
Greets everyone by using names whenever possible; extends thanks whenever appropriate; makes relationship building the number one priority at all times. This position is responsible for ensuring that the mission, purpose, image and core values of the YMCA are conveyed.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :
1. Works with lead teach to implement the Curriculum in classroom.
2. Assists lead teacher in developing monthly lesson plans.
3. Communicates information directly with parents / guardians.
4. Ensures compliance with NYS Office of Child and Family Services (OCFS) regulations (i.e. safety, nutrition, discipline, staff, health care plan, training).
5. Maintains a safe, healthy, warm, engaging, and inviting environment.
6. Identifies and resolves problem areas to ensure parent satisfaction.
7. Acts as a role model for children and adults by conducting themselves in a caring, responsible, honest, and respectful manner.
8. Ensures safety and appropriate behavior in the classroom and the entire ELC and helps to manage transitions smoothly.
9. Assists in evaluation and assess children to determine developmental level.
10. Records in writing on daily notes for families that reflect the child’s daily experiences in the program.
11. Keeps the safety of children as a first priority. Emphasizes personal safety and emotional well-being with the children, families, and other staff at all times.
12. Uses positive and constructive methods of behavior management.
13. Participates in 30 hours of training per year and 25% must be in the area of children with special needs.
14. Keeps updated professional knowledge through self-study, research, and / or conference / workshop participation.
15. Maintains certification in CPR, First Aid, and other certifications as required for the position.
16. Builds bridges within the community so that all segments of society have access to the Y.
17. Participates in branch programs and special events as requested.
18. Represents the YMCA in a professional manner at all times.
19. Attends regularly scheduled staff meetings.
20. Adherence to Confidentiality policy and code of ethics at all times.
21. Adherence to all policies regarding personal conduct as listed in the YMCA Employee Handbook.
22. Carries out additional responsibilities and assignments deemed necessary by the CEO or the Director.

QUALIFICATIONS :
In accordance with the New York State Office of Children and Family Services, the Assistant Teacher must be at least 18 years of age and must have substantial experience working with children under the age of 5 years.
Prior to the start of employment, documentation of a current medical statement and TB skin test must be submitted and every two years, thereafter.

While performing the duties of the job, the employee is regularly required to : bend, stoop, kneel, twist, sit, reach with hands, grasp, stand, hear, speak, have finger dexterity, walk, push, pull and have visual acuity. Must have ability to plan, lead and participate in a range of activities in a variety of outdoor / indoor settings. Requires light physical effort such as frequent lifting of small children, or occasionally working in uncomfortable positions such as on the floor.
