About Standardized Patients (At SUNY Upstate Medical University)
A standardized / simulated patient (SP) is a trained individual who acts as a patient for healthcare provider training and assessment. SPs follow a script and are trained for specific medical cases, anticipating and answering student questions. SPs use checklists and forms to help faculty evaluate learner performance during simulated patient encounters. SPs are everyday laypeople from the community who are trained to provide scripted realistic medical histories and symptoms, offering feedback to students. This approach improves learners' skills and patient interactions.
