Job description

About the Position : Description

The Roanoke City Sheriff’s Office is seeking qualified individuals to provide pastoral care to men and women incarcerated in the Roanoke City Adult Detention Center. Detention Center Chaplains administers and provides spiritual welfare and religious guidance to individuals in a correctional setting.

Detention Center Chaplains are credentialed, experienced, and professional. Detention Center Chaplains are part-time positions.

Examples of Duties

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ensures freedom of religious practices as accommodated by the department
  • Provides spiritual guidance and care to all offenders without regard to cultural and / or religious differences
  • Provides individual and / or group counseling for offenders
  • Consults with professional and community groups on topics related to detention center ministries
  • May conduct religious services or lead small groups as needed and as is feasible
  • Administer rites, sacraments, or ordinances when appropriate and qualified
  • Respond to any resident crisis situation within the detention center, such as the death of a family member
  • Approves special religious diet requests

Typical Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ordination or membership in an ecclesiastically recognized religious institute of vowed men or women
  • Current ecclesiastical endorsement by the recognized endorsing body of the faith
  • Willingness to provide spiritual and religious guidance to residents of all faiths
  • Necessary credentials and the ability to provide rites, sacraments, ordinances, or services in his / her faith tradition
  • EDUCATION and / or EXPERIENCE

    High school diploma or general education degree (GED); successful completion of ministry training; ordained or approved to function in ministry by an appropriate religious authority; faith group endorsement; one or more years experience in ministry in a correctional setting preferred.

    Ability to read, analyze, and interpret journals, reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to inquiries or complaints from citizens, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community orally and in writing. Ability to effectively present information to management, public groups, and / or boards of directors. Ability to resolve conflicts.

    REASONING ABILITY

    Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions and deal with several abstract and concrete variables when working collaboratively toward a common issue or resolution.
