Job description

Carpenter I / II

The Carpenter I / II position is primarily responsible for performing both rough and finish carpentry to maintain, repair, and renovate university buildings and facilities. This position requires broad expertise in carpentry techniques, proficiency with relevant tools, and adherence to safety protocols.

Carpenter I

  • Building Maintenance & Repairs : Performs rough and finish carpentry work to repair and maintain university buildings. This includes repairing walls, floors, ceilings, roofs, stairs, and structural components. Responds to work orders for general building maintenance and repairs.
  • Cabinetry and Millwork : Constructs, installs, and repairs custom cabinetry, shelving, countertops, and millwork. Utilizes a variety of hand and power tools to cut, shape, and assemble wood and other materials.
  • Renovations and New Construction : Participates in renovation projects and new construction, including framing, installing drywall, insulation, doors, windows, and trim. Reads and interprets blueprints and schematics to ensure compliance with project specifications.
  • Planning, Estimation, and Documentation : Read and interpret blueprints, plans, and technical drawings to determine project requirements. Estimate time, materials, and equipment needed for specific carpentry jobs. Maintain accurate records of work orders, time sheets, and materials used.
  • Safety and Compliance : Adheres to all university safety protocols and building codes. Maintains a clean and organized work area and ensures all tools and equipment are in good working condition.
  • Project / Event Support and Coordination : Collaborates with other trades and facilities staff (e.g., plumbers, electricians, painters) to coordinate project timelines and provide support to university events. Communicates effectively with supervisor and university staff to provide project updates and resolve issues.

Carpenter II

  • Lead Carpenter : Perform duties of lead carpenter on assigned projects as the person on-site responsible for customer satisfaction, protection, cleanliness, safety, carpentry labor, and communication. Develop bill of materials and project schedules. Make recommendations regarding construction means & methods, details, and materials.

    Carpenter I

  • Education : High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Professional Work Experience : Two-year vocational / technical degree or equivalent training in carpentry, OR four years of hands-on experience as a carpenter, preferably in the building construction industry.
  • Knowledge Areas and Skills :
  • Knowledge of industry standard safety procedures related to construction projects, use of tools, equipment, materials, personal protective equipment, etc.

  • Ability to read blueprints.
  • Must be able to understand written and oral instructions and procedures.
  • Computer literacy.
  • A valid driver's license and the ability to drive University vehicles.
  • Preferred, But Not Required

  • Knowledge Areas and Skills :
  • Experience in building construction industry.

  • Experience using a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
  • Working knowledge of associated trades.
  • Lift Training / Certification.
  • 10-Hour OSHA Certification.
  • Carpenter II

  • Education : High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Professional Work Experience : Two-year vocational / technical degree or equivalent training in carpentry and four years of hands-on experience as a carpenter, OR eight years of hands-on experience as a carpenter, preferably in the building construction industry.
  • Knowledge Areas and Skills :
  • Experience leading carpentry projects or the demonstrated ability to successfully lead carpentry projects.

  • Ability to read blueprints.
  • Knowledge of industry standard safety procedures related to construction projects, use of tools, equipment, materials, personal protective equipment, etc.
  • Must be able to understand written and oral instructions and procedures.
  • Computer literacy.
  • A valid driver's license and the ability to drive University vehicles.
  • Preferred, But Not Required

  • Knowledge Areas and Skills :
  • Experience in building construction industry.

  • Experience using a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
  • Working knowledge of associated trades.

  • Additional Details

    Ability to work evenings and weekends as required, including overtime, in support of University's operations and special events. This position is classified as part of essential services - report to work even if campus has a delayed opening, early closing, or is closed, unless instructed otherwise by facilities supervisor or when there are concerns related to personal safety. A post offer criminal background and driving record check, drug screening will be conducted. Employee to furnish and maintain own small, hand tools (e.g. hammer, tape measure, knife, screwdrivers, levels, etc.). Support and promote university sustainability efforts. Demonstrated ability to use Microsoft Office and other computer programs such as email and calendars and the ability to learn software programs such as work order tracking, events management, scheduling, estimating software and other programs utilized by the university. Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusiveness. Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a team member; take initiative; use good judgment; and communicate effectively verbally and in written formats. Strong customer-focus and time management skills.

    Physical Requirements

    Lift and carry 75 pounds unassisted. Must have sufficient strength and physical dexterity to perform duties and responsibilities of this position. Ability to move around work sites including climb ladders, stairs and scaffolds; enter and exit trenches, crawl spaces and confined areas; work on scaffolds, elevated walkways, roofs and elevated areas. Must be able to perform work in a safe manner in accordance with OSHA standards, department and University's policies. The scope of the position requires exposure to and use of chemicals, solvents, cleaners, and lubricants common to carpentry work that may be hazardous and / or cause injury if specific instructions regarding their mixture, use, and disposal / storage are not properly followed. The person in this position works indoors and outdoors. There is daily exposure to dust, dirt, weather, and temperature changes.

    Salary Range

    Carpenter I : $19.74 - $24.67

    Carpenter II : $22.70 - $28.38

    Salary Range : 19.74-28.38
