Job description

Sheriff's Office Patrol Sergeant

The purpose of this position is to help manage the operations of the Sheriff's Office, particularly taking responsibility for other officers. This position, under direction, plans, directs, supervises, assigns, reviews and participates in the work of law enforcement staff involved in traffic and field patrol, investigations, crime prevention, community relations, and related services and activities. The Sergeant performs a variety of administrative and technical tasks relative to the assigned area of responsibility. The role also involves assuming responsibility for assigned special programs.

Supervisory Responsibilities :

Regularly assigns work to other employees and supervises related activities. Provides recommendations on scheduling work hours of employees; employee training and employee coaching. Makes final decisions on granting time off.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities :

  • Prepares reports for various cases, including those going to trial; prepares supplemental reports, as required; represents the Sheriff's Office at court hearings; prepares reports and materials requested and subpoenaed by the courts and testifies in court cases.
  • Supervises and reviews work of law enforcement staff; prepares and coordinates work schedules and provides full range of administrative support to management staff; prioritizes and assigns tasks and projects; assures that deputies are ready and prepared for duty, are adequately trained and equipped, and are held accountable for duties and responsibilities assigned. Conducts daily staff briefings; coordinates work schedules; monitors the use of overtime and leave time; reviews case reports; assures that all investigative reports and paperwork are completed in a timely manner; advises superior regarding significant developments with investigations.
  • Reviews incident reports, required forms, summonses, records and related documents prepared by subordinates.
  • May perform special assignment in areas of expertise, including school resource program, lake patrol, K-9, civil process, or special skills training; may be assigned to special enforcement, intervention and investigative teams, or to specific enforcement region. Conducts search and rescue operations and responds to other emergency situations, including wildfires and other natural disasters.
  • Participates in shift activities, as necessary, and assists other deputies with calls.
  • Assumes responsibility for assigned special programs, projects or Department-wide functions or activities; coordinates activities with other agencies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Budget Responsibilities :

This position reviews, edits and provides recommendations on the preparation of Department budget.

Project Responsibilities :

Provides project research support on projects involving process improvement, quality assurance and employee training and development.

Oral Communication Duties :

This position trains colleagues, explains County procedures or processes, responds to public inquiries, participates in meetings, speaks with the media, negotiates or persuades and conducts meetings.

Written Communication Duties :

This position creates or edits documents, internal memos, emails and reports.

Interactions with the General Public :

Interacts extensively with employees, customers, the general public, vendors, regulatory bodies, and other groups and / or individuals and Institutions over the telephone, by email, and / or in person.

Interactions Specifically with Customers :

Always (More than 85% in a year)

Minimum Education / Directly Related Experience Required :

High School Diploma or GED. Three (3) years experience as a sworn law enforcement officer, including some leadership experience.

Professional Credentials Required :

AZ Police Officer's Standards and Training Certification. Must pass semi-annual firearms course with assigned duty firearms, must maintain certification in CPR and other duty specific equipment and weapons. Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License.

Knowledge Required :

Public safety and security; law enforcement; public safety regulations; emergency management procedures and first responders' protocols. Knowledge and familiarity with Sheriff's Office policies and procedures; current law enforcement techniques and procedures, including case laws governing arrest, probable cause and search and seizure; criminal and traffic codes; County, State and Federal laws, regulations and ordinances; rules of evidence; criminal justice and court systems, procedures and protocols in the State of Arizona; investigative and interrogative procedures, and protocols for observation and memorization of critical details; use-of-force rules; hazardous chemicals and materials, first aid and CPR; special regional law enforcement zones; geography, roads, and landmarks of Gila County.

Physical Demands :

  • Occasionally required to physically restrain persons.
  • Occasionally stands to present and to direct traffic; routinely stands to attend to reported incidents.
  • Routinely sits to complete report, operate computers, operate special equipment and complete a program.
  • Occasionally sits to attend to reception areas, perform watchmen duties and attend to other duties.
  • Regularly lifts work related materials that are less than 10 lbs., 25 lbs., and up to 75 lbs.; rarely lifts more than 75 lbs.
  • Constantly requires dexterity for peacekeeping tools; routinely requires dexterity for keyboard operation; rarely requires dexterity for special gadgets and for special machines.
  • Occasionally walks to and from work sites and kneels and twists to examine evidence; regularly bends to examine evidence; rarely stoops and crawls to reach and grab.
  • Work Environment :

    Incumbents in this position occasionally spends time in office environment, in lobby environment; rarely spends time in computer server room(s), computer laboratory and science laboratory. Regularly spends time in outdoor areas and in automobile; occasionally spends time in and around outside construction areas and in tight spaces.

    Safety Risk Exposure :

    Incumbents in this position are subject to physical danger such as dangerous vehicles, gun shots and physical attacks; may be exposed to hazardous chemicals, drugs, infectious and communicable diseases; mechanical hazards, chemical hazards, electrical hazards, blood-borne pathogens, communicable diseases, fire hazards, explosives, respiratory hazards, extreme temperature, noise and vibration, wetness and humidity; subject to extended periods of intense concentration in review of crime scenes, investigations and preparing law enforcement reports.

    Occasionally, incumbents in this position may become exposed to verbal abuse by customers or citizens either in-person or through telephone.

    May be required to work during weekdays, weekends, and holidays and on any assigned shift.

    Protective Gear & Safety Manuals :

    Incumbents in this position are required to constantly follow written safety procedures and manuals relevant to the division or department. May be required to wear or use safety equipment or tools at all times while on duty and required to utilize compliance devices. Occasionally incumbents in this position are required to wear hearing protection, eye protection devices and hard hats.

    Consequences of Error :

    Potential errors can result in property damage, individual injury, or loss of life.

    Security Requirements :

    Incumbents in this position are required to be U.S. citizens with zero felony convictions; required to have an unrestricted Driver's License upon appointment.

    Prior to being appointed, all incumbents in this position are subject to complete a background check as well as medical, polygraph, psychological, written and oral examinations.

    Physical Fitness Requirements :

    Incumbents are required to maintain a level of physical fitness to meet Department standards.

    Specific Employment Conditions :

    Must pass Certification requirements by the Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Commission; may be required to obtain additional specific skills training and technical certifications.
