Performs intermediate level technical work in the Public Works department. Performs semi-skilled and skilled work in the Athletic field maintenance division. May assist landscaping, tree trimming and maintenance of irrigation systems. Work is performed with a degree of independence, requiring initiative, problem-solving, and the exercise of independent judgment in completing assigned tasks.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

The list of essential functions, as outlined herein, is intended to be representative of the tasks performed within this classification.   • Maintains and repairs City owned property, including parks, athletic fields, and other assets
  • Prepares and sets up athletic fields, including lining and striping fields, setting up goals, bases, and other equipment.
  • Performs turf maintenance : mowing, fertilizing, watering, aeration, and pest / weed control
  • Maintains infields and clay areas : raking, dragging, leveling, pitching mounds, baselines, and batter's boxes
  • Operates equipment used in field maintenance, including trucks, lifts, trailers, lawn equipment, arrow boards, forklifts, ladders, and power tools
  • Performs duties safely to protect staff, visitors, players, and residents
  • Coordinates with coaches and recreation staff to schedule field use and maintenance
  • Performs general landscaping tasks, including trimming trees and shrubs, laying sod, and weeding
  • Provides semi-skilled manual labor in the upkeep of parks and landscaped grounds
  • Assists with the maintenance and repair of irrigation systems.
  • Maintains daily work logs and records
  • Sets up for City functions and transports necessary equipment
  • Assists skilled tradesmen and other Public Works divisions as needed
  • Participates in emergency callout rotation
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or required

Qualifications

High school diploma or GED; supplemented by a minimum of four (4) years' experience in athletic field maintenance, the use of standard hand tools and the operation of light power driven equipment, trucks, and other vehicles;an equivalent combination of education, certification, training, and / or experience may be considered. A valid driver's license with a good driving record is required.

State of Florida Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class B with air brake endorsement, and a Pesticide Applicator License issued by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS) are preferred at time of hire.

Candidates without these credentials will be required to obtain them within twelve (12) months of employment. The City will cover the cost of training and books required to obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class B with air brake endorsement, and a Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS) Pesticide Applicator License. Employees are responsible for completing all training and study on their own time.

Knowledge, skills & abilities :

  • Knowledge of a variety of manual and semi-skilled maintenance techniques in performance of manual tasks and associated maintenance tools
  • Working knowledge of safety methods, techniques, and procedures
  • Skill in Microsoft Office products (Word and Outlook)
  • Skill in providing good customer service
  • Skill in the use of common hand tools and mechanical equipment
  • Ability to use critical thinking skills to arrive at solutions and suggest improvements to processes
  • Ability to clearly communicate and understand information in English, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
  • Ability to regularly attend work and arrive punctually for designated work schedule
  • Ability to operate light and heavy construction equipment
  • Physical And Environmental Requirements

    Depending on functional area of assignment, tasks involve the regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work and may require occasional lifting, carrying, pushing and / or pulling of heavy objects or materials (up to 80 pounds). Tasks that require moving objects of significant weight require the assistance of another person and / or use of proper techniques and moving equipment. Tasks may involve extended periods of time standing and / or walking. Tasks are regularly performed outside with potential for exposure to adverse conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, fumes and / or poor ventilation, wetness, humidity, rain, temperature and noise extremes, machinery and / or moving vehicles, vibrations, electric currents, animals / wildlife, toxic / poisonous agents, gases or chemicals, oils and other cutting fluids, violence and / or disease, or pathogenic substances. Some tasks require manual dexterity, in addition to visual and hearing acuity.
