The Department of Hematology & Medical Oncology is comprised of physicians, nurses, researchers, advanced practice providers (APP) and other healthcare professionals specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with cancers or disorders of the blood. We believe in compassionate patient care and we will always put patients and their family members first. By joining the Medical Oncology team as a Medical Assistant, you will collaborate with fellow staff to create a welcoming, comfortable environment for patients, families and visitors. You will assist with rooming patients, reconciling their health information, answering in-basket messages, answering patient questions, providing reassurance, and communicating provider recommendations to patients. All your work helps ensure the best possible health outcomes. A caregiver in this position works Monday-Friday from 8:00AM 5:00PM.

Key Responsibilities

• Assist with performing screening and treatments by gathering information related to health maintenance, collecting specimens and documenting patient care.
• Update health maintenance at patient visits, accurately identify medication changes and update allergy information at each visit.
• Monitor and communicate changes in patient condition.
• Administer specific medications under the direction of the provider.
• Maintain equipment and medical supplies, including reordering, stocking, cleaning and troubleshooting.
• Maintain examination areas.
• Assist in pre-visit planning by updating the health maintenance tab.
• Perform administrative or clerical duties as assigned, including filing, reception, scheduling, data entry and patient registration.

Qualifications

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

• Graduate from an accredited Medical Assisting Program.
• Military training as a Hospital Corpsman (HM), Combat Medic (68W) or Medical Service Technician (4N0X1) will be considered.
• Current demonstrated clinical proficiency.
• Completion of a clinical externship OR extensive clinical experience.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross required within new hire period.

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

• CMA, NCMA or CCMA certification.
• Successful completion of a CC Externship.

Physical Requirements

• Manual dexterity to operate office equipment.
• May require extended periods of standing, walking or sitting.
• Good visual acuity through normal or corrected vision.
• Light Work - Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
• Note: The constant stress and strain of maintaining a production rate pace, especially in an industrial setting, can be and is physically demanding of a worker even though the amount of force exerted is negligible.
