Must-Have : 2-5 years in a smaller ICU; must be able to blend into a culture and family atmosphere; must be a team player; preferred experience with Cerner.
Description :
ICU has 8 total beds with an average census of 3-4 patients.
Nurse / patient ratios are 1 : 1-2 with 2-3 nurses on per shift.
Common diagnoses include a high number of sepsis patients, medical-surgical patients, DKA, CHF, COPD, and cardiac caths that get shipped out due to lack of a cath lab.
Most patients on this unit are borderline stepdown patients.
Experience in titrating drips is required.
Common titratable drips include Levo, heparin, insulin, and dopamine.
The charge nurse takes a patient assignment.
There are no nurse aids on this unit, but a unit clerk is available.
A hospitalist is present 24 / 7, and an intensivist is available via telemedicine.
Respiratory therapy is available in the ICU 24 / 7 and they take patient assignments.
Monitoring equipment includes Via or Hamiltons vents.
RN staff are required to read their own strips, and Phillips is the brand of the telemetry monitors.
Self-scheduling is allowed to some degree, with schedules made out 30-45 days in advance.
Weekend requirements include every other or 4 weekend shifts in 4 weeks.
Holiday requirements follow permanent staff rotation.
There is no call or standby requirement, but staff can take call if desired.
Floating occurs rarely, but could be to medical-surgical units or pediatrics if qualified.
Scrubs must be navy blue.
Unit / department-specific orientation consists of 2-3 shifts.
The hospital can cancel up to 4 shifts per 13-week assignment, while 3 shifts can be canceled for shorter assignments.
Charting is done through Cerner.
A BSN is not required.
The trauma level is 3.
The care setting is acute.
Shift notes include 12 hour nights, every other weekend, and first to float.
Required certifications are ACLS, BLS, and NIHSS.
